GEELONG star Patrick Dangerfield said the Cats will not take solace from losing and need to fine tune their game further ahead of finals.

The 29-year-old was one of Geelong’s best in the one-point loss to the lions, finishing with a game-high 36 disposals and a goal.

Dangerfield lamented his side’s inability to close out the win after holding a 17-point advantage mid-way through the final term.

“We played some really nice footy, but as I said we will not take solace from losing and we need to make sure we fine tune ourselves for a few weeks’ time,” Dangerfield said speaking to krockfootball.com.au.

“For most of the game we did that and gave ourselves the opportunity to take the four points and to let that slip is really disappointing.”

The result continued Geelong’s trend of alternating wins and losses since the bye.

However, the Cats showed that they are not far off returning to their best after matching it with one of the premiership favourites on their home turf.

The coaches would have also been impressed with some of the performances of their less experienced players, with Tom Atkins and Gryan Miers amongst the best for the Cats.

Dangerfield admits that it is important this week that the club’s leaders make sure that the mood within the group is high because the club remains in great position heading into the penultimate round.

“You’re totally spot on, but that being said I don’t mind that we are disappointed, that individuals are disappointed,” he said.

“I think if you weren’t you wouldn’t care and I think that shows that we are here to win regardless of the position that we are in.”

“We have obviously given ourselves a really strong chance and I don’t think there is anything wrong with being disappointed for a few days.

“We played some great footy and gave ourselves an opportunity and then we did squander it, so that’s reality and we have got to live with that and get better and improve upon it.“

A win against the Blues on Saturday will see the Cats secure a top two finish and a home final. A loss could see Geelong slip as low as fourth.
