The Geelong Cats battled challenging and windy conditions on a chilly Friday night in Frankston, producing a polished four-quarter performance to defeat the Dolphins by 52 points. Despite the breeze making ball movement difficult throughout the contest, the Cats adapted well as the game progressed, finishing strongly to record a convincing 15.16 (106) to 8.6 (54) victory.
Geelong made an ideal start, with Jamieson Ballantyne kicking the opening goal of the night after the Cats generated the first inside 50 of the contest. Strong defensive pressure across the backline helped stop Frankston's early attacks, while debutant Charlie McKinnon marked his first VFL appearance in style with a memorable first goal. The opening term remained an arm wrestle, with George Stevens setting the tone through the midfield, collecting nine disposals to lead all players for the quarter.
The Cats began to gain dominance in the second term as their midfield took control around the contest. James Worpel hit the scoreboard before Jay Polkinghorne added another major, while Jesse Mellor kicked a goal with the assist of his captain Dan Capiron. Keighton Matofai-Forbes proved a constant threat, booting two goals for the quarter to help Geelong establish a handy lead heading into the main break.
Mitch Knevitt was influential with 14 disposals and two clearances in the first half, while Cillian Burke impressed across half-back, finishing the second quarter with 12 disposals and four marks. Geelong's ball movement also began to tell, winning the overall disposal count 163-121 by halftime.
The Cats continued to build momentum after the break with one of the highlights of the night, moving the ball coast-to-coast before Polkinghorne finished the passage with his second goal.
Geelong controlled possession throughout the third term, winning both the kicking and handball counts while continuing to apply pressure despite inside 50s remaining relatively even.
Brad Close worked through the midfield and forward half, collecting 10 disposals before adding his name to the goal scorers, while Lennox Hofmann continued his impressive evening with 15 disposals and four marks. Jack Costello also stood out across half-back, gathering 12 disposals and five marks as the Cats maintained control heading into the final change.
With the game on their terms, Geelong put the result beyond doubt in the final quarter. Mitch Knevitt struck with the opening two goals of the term as the Cats' attacking pressure overwhelmed Frankston. Polkinghorne added his third goal of the night before Jesse Mellor also found the scoreboard to cap off a dominant finish.
Keighton Matofai-Forbes delivered one of his best performances of the season, finishing with 16 disposals, seven marks and two goals in a strong display at both ends of the ground.
George Stevens was outstanding from start to finish, producing a dominant midfield performance with 33 disposals, 12 clearances and eight score involvements to be among Geelong's best. Gryan Miers also made a significant impact with 27 disposals and three clearances, while Knevitt and Polkinghorne also played pivotal roles in the convincing victory.
The win continues the Cats' strong run of form as they bank another important four points and build momentum heading deeper into the VFL season.
