Tanner Bruhn was already in the midst of a strong campaign, but he took it to another level on Thursday night and there was not much more Geelong could have asked for from the young star.
Despite the defeat, Bruhn was able to have a strong impact both across half back and through the middle of the ground, finishing the night with 22 disposals, which included 12 contested possessions at a solid 77.3% disposal efficiency.
What was most impressive was his ability to have an influence at both ends of the ground, picking off an equal team-high 10 intercept possessions in defence, while also registering seven inside 50s and seven score involvements in a brilliant and well-rounded display.
He was also able to accumulate 501 metres gained, backing up a strong performance against Fremantle a fortnight ago when he was thrust into a more permanent midfield role.
When asked about his year to date, Bruhn said that it has been nice adding a layer of versatility to his game and being able to perform different roles as the team requires.
"It has not been too bad," Bruhn told Cats Media.
"I have sort of been thrown around everywhere, which has been nice.
"I have had a taste of all different positions and roles, I am just trying to bring my best every week and whatever the team needs, I will put my hand up.
"We look forward to next week, lots to work on and lots to build on, but excited for the next six weeks."
The damage was done early in Thursday's match as the Lions piled on eight goals in the first quarter, and despite a reasonable display after quarter time, it proved to be a bridge too far for the Cats.
It now leaves Geelong with a 9-7 record after four defeats in their last five games, with seven games remaining in the home and away season.
Next up on the schedule is the Cats' final interstate trip in the regular season, with attention quickly turning to a clash with the GWS Giants at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
For Bruhn, it is a battle against his former side, but it also looms as a vital clash in the context of Geelong's season.
"Yeah they are my old side, so hopefully I can get myself up for it," Bruhn said.
"We have got a lot to work on, but also at the same time, we don't.
"I think we are not far off our best footy and coming into a really important part of the year, I reckon we are going to hit our straps. I think we are all confident.
"The Giants will be a good test, they are a good side and up there especially. But we can match them, so we will be looking forward to it and we will be ready to go."
