2026 Pre-Season Training - Wednesday January 28 | Sam De Koning & Connor O'Sullivan

There may not be anything more important in the Geelong line-up than versatility and adaptability

For years it has been a staple of Chris Scott's side, the ability to shift the magnets and give the opposition an unfamiliar look, helping to wrestle back momentum at crucial stages within matches.

The concept is not limited to just a select few players, something that Sam De Koning has embodied over the past two seasons.

After bursting onto the scene as a key defender, the 24-year-old was deployed in the ruck during the latter stages of the 2024 season, before reprising that role early in 2025.

Heading into the new campaign with plenty of opportunity in front of him, De Koning gave a strong hint when quizzed on whether he would feature in the ruck once again.

"The ruck is definitely in play," De Koning confirmed.

"I pride myself on being able to be a flexible player for the team.

"If the coaches see me in that role, then I definitely see myself as a multi-faceted player that can play in multiple positions.

"It is definitely on the cards for 2026."

De Koning impressed in the ruck early last year, collecting 25 disposals and 18 hit-outs in Round 1 against Fremantle and spending the first three weeks in the position, before returning to his defensive post for the majority of the season.

It will be one storyline to watch next week as the Cats return to action, preparing to take on Hawthorn in a match simulation on Monday afternoon.

While there has been plenty to learn from some of Geelong's champions, De Koning admitted that it will be nice to square off against some different opponents.

"It is not too bad playing against the likes of Jeremy Cameron, Shannon Neale and Patrick Dangerfield every session, I think it really helps you for the season coming up," De Koning said.

"But having a different opposition that is trying to play a style that is unfamiliar, compared to our teammates will certainly be good for us.

"It will get us prepped well for the year."

De Koning was also questioned about which players have been setting the track alight over the pre-season, with one name in particular coming to mind.

"I have really liked what Jhye Clark has been able to do over the pre-season," De Koning said.

"He has been stacking sessions together, and some of the performances that he has put out at training has been impressive to see.

"He is one that I have been looking at closely and been really impressed by. He is a top-quality footballer, he is definitely worth the spot in the side.

"I obviously don't pick the side, but I am really hoping he gets a chance."
