If there has been one thing that has really stood out about Geelong in 2026, it is that they are capable of winning games of football in a number of different ways.

Despite missing some key personnel last week, the Cats were able to adapt after falling behind by a significant margin early against the Kangaroos, storming over the top to record a crucial victory.

The second quarter in particular was exquisite, but it was set up by some of Geelong's dynamic ball-users off half back and through the middle of the ground, including Lawson Humphries, Tanner Bruhn and Ollie Dempsey.

The Cats were able to score 39 points from their defensive half, their fifth biggest total from that source this year. They also recorded their second highest total of points from turnovers, their third best transition for chains to scores, and their sixth best game for transition from defensive 50 to forward 50.

Speaking with Cats Media after the game, Lawson Humphries said it was all about putting speed on the ball and getting Geelong's forwards good looks on Saturday afternoon.

"If you look around the AFL, a lot of it is about how quickly you can move the ball from defence to offence," Humphries said.

"I think our ability to put energy on the ball and really drive the ball forward, it really helps our forwards. I think that is the main thing, our forwards are so good if they get in a one-on-one.

"But our defence is really good at getting back and giving out numbers, so it was really important for us to get our forwards as many one-on-one looks as we could.

"I felt like the forwards did a really good job off the back of that."

Humphries was instrumental against the Kangaroos as he continued an outstanding season so far, amassing 20 disposals and four score involvements, while also snagging a brilliant goal during Geelong's barnstorming run in the second term.

It helped the Cats to move inside the top six on the ladder entering the final round of the home-and-away season, now in a prime position to secure at least a home Elimination Final in the opening week of September.

But they still have a job to take care of this weekend, as Geelong returns home to take on Richmond at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night, needing a win to solidify their spot on the ladder.

It will be another exciting day at the Cattery with a blockbuster double-header looming, as Geelong's AFLW team commences the action at 5.00pm AEST, before the AFL clash kicks off at 7.45pm.

Humphries said it will be a monumental day for the club, and one he is really looking forward to as the Cats conclude their home-and-away season.

"It is really exciting," Humphries said about the double-header.

"Being able to play with the girls, being able to get here early and watch them play was really exciting. Obviously not the result that they would've wanted, but hopefully they can turn it around this week and have a win.

"It is obviously really good to be able to feel like we are partially involved in their game day, so that was really cool.

"This week is another big game for us, going into Finals you just need to be playing the best footy that you can be.

"We are really confident that off the back of our last month, we have been playing some good footy and we can have a really good run in September.

"We just need to continue that momentum, and keep trying to get better every week."
