ANZAC Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and unity as we remember those brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

It is a time to honour the courage and enduring spirit of the soldiers who served, reminding all of the cost of freedom and providing the chance to remember those lives lost fighting for Australia.

Since 1995, the AFL has featured on ANZAC Day with the traditional Collingwood and Essendon match headlining the day from a football sense, while also supporting the ANZAC Day Appeal through money raised across the week.

With ANZAC Day falling on a Saturday this year, Geelong will have the privilege to play on the day when they take on Port Adelaide, wearing a specially designed ANZAC guernsey in commemoration of the day.

It will be the first time since 2008 that the Cats have played on ANZAC Day and their last appearance was an absolute thriller, as they took on Fremantle at Subiaco in a game that came down to the final seconds.

The Cats were undefeated in the first five weeks of the 2008 season and they were red-hot favourites for their Round 6 clash, as they headed west to take on the Dockers.

But despite their respective positions on the ladder, it was evident early on that this would not be a straightforward victory for Geelong and they were put under immense pressure early.

In his 150th game, Cameron Mooney kicked the Cats' opening goal midway through the first quarter but it was in the midst of a lean start for the visitors, as that would be their only goal through to the 13 minute mark of the second quarter.

While Geelong was struggling to hit the scoreboard, Fremantle were not as Matthew Pavlich piled on four early goals and the Dockers kicked seven of the first eight, breaking away to take a 39 point lead just after quarter time.

But the Geelong team of that era had firepower everywhere and it did not take long for them to flip the momentum, closing out the opening half with a bang to drag themselves right back into the contest.

Darren Milburn kicked a goal at the 23 minute mark of the second term and it sparked an avalanche, with Geelong kicking six goals in nine minutes to cut the deficit to just two points at the main break.

With Geelong seemingly on top and the momentum flowing their way, many were expecting the Cats to put the foot down and pull away after half time.

But Fremantle had other ideas.

The Dockers kicked four unanswered to start the third term, Geelong were held scoreless until the 21 minute mark and goalless for the entire quarter, another major momentum shift putting Fremantle 25 points clear again at the final break.

There seemed to be a significant advantage to one end of Subiaco, perhaps aided by the renowned 'Fremantle Doctor,' but the Cats suddenly had their backs against the wall once again and were staring down a major hurdle with 30 minutes to play.

But in a chaotic contest there was one more twist to the tale, as Geelong came out firing in the final quarter and once again wrestled back the ascendancy.

Paul Chapman kicked his second, Steve Johnson and Cam Mooney added their third majors, Tom Hawkins and Mathew Stokes got involved and in the blink of an eye, the Cats were eight points clear with time ticking down.

Any celebrations were put on hold however as Pavlich kicked his fifth with nearly four minutes remaining, leaving less than a kick separating the two teams with the pressure ratcheted through the roof and the tension palpable right around Subiaco.

The game fell onto Pavlich's boot as he had one last set-shot to win the game for Fremantle, but his kick drifted right and slammed into the right goal post to leave the Cats one point ahead.

One final entry inside 50 from the Dockers was marked by Harry Taylor, a clutch play from Geelong's star defender as time elapsed and the siren sounded with the ball still in his hands.

Joel Selwood (26 disposals) was ultimately awarded the three Brownlow votes, while Cam Mooney (three goals) celebrated his milestone match in style.
