Geelong and Sydney's winning streaks make this year's Toyota AFL Grand Final unlike any before it.

The Cats will enter Saturday's premiership decider at the MCG as favourites, riding a run of hot form that has seen them win 15 straight games.

Yet, while the Swans barely hung on against Collingwood to secure their spot on the last Saturday in September, that was their ninth consecutive win.

For the first time in VFL/AFL history, both teams will enter the Grand Final on winning streaks of more than six games.

In fact, only once before have two teams met at any stage during a season when on bigger winning runs than those of the Cats and Swans. That happened in 2009, when Geelong and St Kilda – both 13-0 – met in round 14.

If that memorable game, which the Saints won thanks to a huge late mark and goal from Michael Gardiner, at Docklands is any guide, Saturday is sure to be enthralling.

The biggest AFL crowd at Docklands (54,444) witness one of the greatest home-and-away games in history, as two powerhouse sides fight it out until Michael Gardiner settles the contest
It will be just the fifth time that two teams on winning streaks of more than five games have made the premiership decider, with the most recent coming in 2004, when Port Adelaide beat Brisbane.

On three of the previous four occasions, the team on the longer streak lifted the cup.

This year, the Cats went from 5-4 to 18-4, including two wins over the Western Bulldogs and defeats of Richmond and Melbourne, and then won two finals.

The Swans were 9-6 and finished 16-6, beating the Bulldogs, Fremantle and Collingwood prior to September.

The stage is set – a Grand Final like no other, with two red-hot teams on winning streaks and with everything on the line.
