AFLW Match Preview | A Friday Night Showdown in the Wild West

It is a must-win game for Geelong as they head to Perth for a clash with West Coast on Friday

Sitting in 10th on the ladder with three games remaining in the home and away season, Geelong must win on Friday night to keep their Finals hopes alive.

The Cats head west to Sullivan Logistics Stadium to take on West Coast in Round 10, the Eagles currently occupying eighth place on the ladder heading into the pointy end of the season.

Looking to build on a strong win over the GWS Giants last week, the Cats need to win to keep touch with the top eight, while West Coast will be looking to respond after falling to Adelaide last weekend.

Take a look at everything you need to know ahead of Geelong's Round 10 match on Friday night.

    Friday October 17th

    Last Time We Met

Geelong and West Coast squared off in the penultimate round of the 2024 AFLW season, with the Cats rolling to a dominant 33-point victory at Mineral Resources Park in Perth.

It was a tight contest early with only two points separating the teams at half time, but the Cats kicked away after half time while restricting the Eagles to a single behind in the second half.

The standout performance came from none other than Aishling Moloney, who remarkably kicked six of the games 12 goals to go with 18 disposals in a sensational display inside forward 50.

Georgie Prespakis (27 disposals, nine clearances) and Nina Morrison (19 disposals, eight tackles) were both instrumental through the middle.

    Key Player To Watch

    Kate Surman

It is rare to see a 33 year old deployed in a new position, but Kate Surman has spent more time through the midfield with great effect over the past few weeks.

In last week's win over the Giants, Surman finished with 15 disposals which was her highest total since 2023, while also picking off an equal game-high six intercept possessions and four score involvements.

Surman did not lose her attacking prowess however, dishing off two goal assists to have a significant impact in the victory over GWS.

AFLW Match Report | Cats' Finals Hopes Dashed in Perth

Catch up on all the action from Geelong's clash with West Coast on Friday night

Geelong's finals hopes have been dashed with a disappointing result on Friday night, falling to West Coast by 31 points at Sullivan Logistics Stadium in a tough and hard-fought contest.

Facing a vastly improved Eagles outfit, the Cats struggled to find avenues to goal and were held to just two majors for the game, while West Coast capitalised on their opportunities through the middle of the match and kicked away.

Claudia Gunjaca was immense in defence and helped the Cats limit the damage throughout the night, finishing with 20 disposals and a game-high 16 intercept possessions.

Amy McDonald (20 disposals, four inside 50's) provided a spark in attack, while Nina Morrison (27 disposals, five clearances) fought hard through the middle.

Both teams generated a number of good looks in the opening quarter but neither side could capitalise on their opportunities, West Coast kicking the only goal of the term and the Cats trailed by six points at the first break.

Geelong were able to limit the damage conceding just one goal from nine inside-50 entries, Claudia Gunjaca was pivotal in defence collecting five intercept possessions and four marks in the first quarter.

Momentum continued to flow the Eagles’ way early in the second term as they kicked another two goals, Zali Friswell finally got the Cats on the board with a goal after the half-time siren, trimming the margin to 14 points at the main break.

The clearance battle was an area of concern for Dan Lowther and his side, trailing that statistic 12-3 in the opening half but they were able to match the Eagles in most other areas around the ground.

Nina Morrison worked hard through the middle and gathered 13 disposals in the first half, while Gunjaca and Georgie Rankin held firm defensively, combining for 13 intercept possessions between them.

The challenge grew even greater for the Cats with West Coast slotting the opening three goals in the third quarter, the deficit blowing out to 32 points halfway through the term and leaving Geelong with a mountain to climb.

Scoring continued to be a big issue for Geelong, held to just one major up until three quarter time and staring down an even five-goal margin heading into the final term.

The Cats fought hard and dominated territory in the last quarter but as had been the case all night, they could not put any scoreboard pressure on the Eagles, eventually falling by 31 points.
