Geelong’s top three players from its AFLW Best and Fairest count are in contention for another award, as the AFLW Players MVP nominees were revealed on Monday.

Best and fairest winner Amy McDonald, runner-up Meghan McDonald and third-placegetter Becky Webster have been unveiled as the Cats’ three nominees for the AFL Players Association award.

In other award categories, Olivia Barber is the Cats’ nomination for best first year player, Julia Crockett-Grills is the nominee for most courageous player, and Meg McDonald is in contention for best captain.

Midfielder Amy McDonald (2021) and defender Meg McDonald (2019) are both Cats AFLW Best and Fairest winners, while Becky Webster enjoyed a breakthrough season in the midfield to finish third in the club’s best and fairest count. Webster also won the Cats' VFLW Best and Fairest in 2019.

Barber played seven of a possible nine games in her debut season, switching between key forward and ruck duties, and kicked three goals for the season, bringing excitement and enthusiasm to the Cats’ line-up.

Crockett-Grills’ courage and determination around the footy was not lost on her teammates or fans this year, with the 26-year-old twice being named the Cats’ AFLW Fan MVP, presented by Viva Energy, during the season.

Leaping for joy: Olivia Barber and Julia Crockett-Grills have been nominated for AFLPA Awards

Voting for the AFLPA awards is a two-step process: first, players nominate a teammate for the awards, with the results forming the shortlist revealed today.

Then, voting is opened up to players across the whole competition to vote for the overall winners, with players unable to vote for a player from their own club.

The AFLPA will recognise the winners during a special collaboration with The Front Bar on Channel 7 on Wednesday night.
