Scott Thompson is arguably one of the best defenders of the past decade.
That’s why his appointment as coach of Geelong’s forward line was an unusual choice.
But the former North Melbourne defender believes his experience in defensive 50 will give him an advantage when coaching the Cats in attack.
“Obviously playing as a defender I know what a forward doesn’t like, so I’m trying to teach that to the forwards,” said Thompson.
“It’s a bit different for me, but I’m enjoying it and hopefully the forwards can give it to the defenders during this season.”
Thompson who retired from the AFL at the end of last season has been working closely this summer with senior coach Paul Hood.
“Hoody’s been awesome so far.
“He’s the senior coach and he’s been helping me out a heap as well.
“He’s told me the game plan and it’s really good and I think it will stand up this season as long as everyone can keep going the way they are and improving.
“I want to improve myself as a coach and Hoody is helping me in that way.”
The 33-year-old has had a positive impact already with the team’s forward line scoring seven goals in their practice match against the Bulldogs on the weekend, the highest score in the team’s short history.
“The forward line’s looking pretty good at the moment.
“You know five obviously start (on the ground) and one on the bench, there’s going to be a bit of a jostle for spots in the team.
“They’re all flying at the moment, it’s good to have that competition in the team for Round 1 spots.”
Round 1 is just over a week away with Geelong playing Fremantle next Sunday February 9 at Fremantle Oval from 2.10pm (5.10pm AEST).
