Geelong continues to prove that there is no challenge too great in the 2026 AFLW season, travelling to Perth and defeating West Coast by 53 points on Saturday night to record their ninth consecutive win.Â
Scoring was harder to come by for the Cats than it had been in previous weeks, but their defensive efforts were sublime as they held the Eagles goalless up until the final two minutes of the match, slowly grinding out a lead in the opening half before putting the game away after the main break.Â
Despite receiving some close attention throughout the game, Georgie Prespakis continued her brilliant campaign with another terrific performance, finishing the match with 39 disposals, 13 score involvements and five clearances.Â
Nina Morrison, Amy McDonald and Mikayla Bowen (all 27 disposals) were all equally impressive and helped to control the middle of the ground, while the young duo of Chantal Mason (23 disposals, 10 score involvements) and Lexi Gregor (six intercept possessions) were also influential.Â
Neither team was able to make significant inroads on the scoreboard in the first quarter, Aishling Moloney booting the opening goal of the game in the dying seconds of the term to give the Cats a six-point lead heading into quarter time.Â
Mikayla Bowen made a bright start with eight disposals in the opening stanza, while Lexi Gregor led all players for intercept possessions to help limit the damage when the Eagles probed forward.Â
Bryde O'Rourke converted a sensational goal on the run in the second term, but with the majority of the play happening between the arcs, scoring continued to be hard to come by and the Cats extended their advantage to 15 points at half time.Â
Continuing her phenomenal season, Georgie Prespakis started to find the footy with ease and finished the half with 17 disposals, while Chantal Mason impressed inside 50 with 13 disposals and five score involvements.Â
The Cats continued to pepper the goals in the third term and finally started to reap the rewards for their efforts, converting a trio of goals to push the margin to 35 points at three quarter time.Â
With the damage done, Geelong kept the foot down in the final term and extended their lead, ultimately closing out a strong 53-point victory.Â
Remarkably, Geelong managed to keep West Coast goalless until the final two minutes of the contest, their dour defensive effort completely nullifying the Eagles' attack and stifling any chance of getting a clean look at the big sticks.Â
