One would only need to rewind 12 months to be reminded of just how perfect Mark O'Connor is for September football. 

It is the time of year when the intensity reaches new heights, the tension goes through the roof and the pressure is palpable no matter which way you turn, which plays into the hands of those who can remain as cool and calm as possible. 

Rarely flustered, O'Connor was involved in some epic battles throughout the 2025 Finals series, such as the famous moments against Brisbane in the Qualifying Final. 

While the theatrics sparked a passion and roar out of the Cats faithful that perhaps had never been heard before, the Irishman remained committed to the job at hand and helped to steer his side to a remarkable victory at the MCG. 

Looking to take the learnings from 2025 into another Finals campaign, O'Connor reflected on the highs and lows as he and the Cats prepare to tackle Carlton on Friday night. 

"It probably was at the time, there was no replays being shown," O'Connor said. 

"Obviously it was a pretty important time, I think we had a mark inside 50 and whoever was kicking at goal wouldn't have been too happy with me.

"You are very isolated in that scenario, but you just have to get over it and move on pretty quickly.

"To be honest, I didn't really think back on 2025 too much. I pretty much went home to Ireland straight away.

"Obviously we were going pretty well, then Brisbane went really well in the Grand Final. It is just a matter of showing up and bouncing back, just keep showing up."

O'Connor has quietly built a fantastic year across the 2026 season, averaging 15 disposals per game while consistently performing a variety of roles as the team requires. 

While the Irishman has been a reliable presence across half back for the Cats, he has shown time and time again that he can line-up in a negating role on some of the competition's best players, doing an effective job in nullifying their impact. 

It is a factor that could become particularly important on Friday night, as Geelong battles a Carlton side that boasts the likes of Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh and Jagga Smith. 

Quizzed on his tagging role, O'Connor said it is a challenge he relishes and one that he would be willing to take on if presented this weekend.  

"It is great really," O'Connor said. 

"It is probably different from most roles in footy, where you kind of express yourself a little bit more.

"But it is something different, and it mixes it up.

"The competitive side takes over a little bit, you just try and lock in. It has been enjoyable."
