Geelong returned to the winners list in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Casey Demons by 32 points after controlling the contest for much of the day.
The Cats made a bright start, applying strong attacking pressure while standing firm in defence to limit Casey's opportunities. AFLW draftee Renee Morgan and fellow debutant Jasmin Stewart both made their VFLW debuts, with Stewart announcing herself in style by kicking the opening goal of the game. Faith Qoon also made an immediate impact, collecting four disposals, three kicks and a mark in an influential first quarter as Geelong established early momentum.
The Cats continued to build their advantage in the second term, maintaining high pressure and moving the ball with speed. Qoon was rewarded for her work rate with a goal before Isabella Davies produced one of the highlights of the afternoon, calmly converting a difficult opportunity under heavy pressure from the Demons. Morgan added another memorable moment by kicking her first goal in the Hoops, while Annie Lee (six disposals, three marks) and Mekah Morrissy who collected 11 disposals and one clearance continued to provide strong contributions around the ground.
Geelong maintained control after half-time, winning the key statistical categories including disposals, kicks, handballs and inside 50s. The Cats' midfield continued to dictate play, allowing the visitors little opportunity to generate sustained momentum. Nikita Harris added to the scoreboard during the third quarter, while Tyla Crabtree continued her strong afternoon with 11 disposals, two marks and two clearances.
The final quarter was more evenly contested, with both sides generating similar inside 50 opportunities, but Geelong remained composed at both ends of the ground. Strong defensive efforts prevented Casey from closing the gap, while Mekah Morrissy and Faith Qoon each added late goals to seal a convincing 32-point victory.
Several Cats impressed across the four quarters. Debutant Jasmin Stewart starred with 26 disposals, four marks, five clearances and the opening goal of the game, while fellow debutant Renee Morgan enjoyed a memorable first appearance, finishing with 17 disposals, four marks, three clearances and her maiden goal in the blue and white hoops.
Isabella Davies was influential through the midfield with 20 disposals and three clearances, Lucy Marescuk provided plenty of drive with 17 disposals, 11 kicks and four marks, and Faith Qoon capped off an outstanding performance with two goals after a strong opening term.
It was a complete team performance from the Cats, whose relentless pressure, speed with the ball and defensive accountability proved the difference in an impressive 32-point win over the Casey Demons.
