It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Kevin Ablett this week, a former Geelong player and a valued member of the football community. Kevin passed away at the age of 67, a man that had a significant impact on the game at elite and local levels, both as a player and a coach.
Kevin was a part of the renowned Ablett family, the older brother of Gary Ablett Senior and the uncle of Gary Ablett Junior and Nathan Ablett.
His VFL career commenced in 1977 at Hawthorn, where he made his debut alongside older brother Geoff and brother-in-law Michael Tuck.
Over four years with the Hawks, Ablett played 31 games at the top level before spending a year with Richmond in 1984 and playing another five games.
Kevin then made the move to Geelong to play alongside brother Gary, playing two games at the top level and featuring in the Cats' reserve grade finals campaign.
Throughout his career, Kevin also made a strong impact at local level and was a well respected player and coach at both Drouin and Lang Lang.
Kevin's son, Luke Ablett went on to feature in Sydney's AFL premiership during the 2006 season while Gary Junior and Nathan both featured in premierships at Geelong.
Kevin, Geoff and Gary Sr reached the VFL after their uncle Len played for Richmond during the World War II years, winning the 1943 premiership.
We extend our sincere condolences to the Ablett family.
Sadly missed, fondly remembered.
