The Geelong Football Club is mourning the passing of life member Sir Donald Trescowthick AC, KBE.
Sir Donald Trescowthick AC KBE was a passionate and energetic supporter of the Geelong Football Club. He provided the Cats with his business expertise, sound direction and guidance with the aim to raise enough money for the club to have the best training facilities and to be financially independent.
He was the Geelong’s #1 ticketholder for a period of 23 years. Within this period the #1 ticketholders lunch was started to raise much needed funds for the Geelong Football Club. The initial lunches were held in a number of venues including a boat and the famous lunch at the Old Geelong Goal. This lunch in time progressed to a key fundraiser for the club and now is held annually as a dinner.
Over the period since Sir Donald began the #1 ticketholders lunch, a significant amount of funds has been raised and used to improve the facilities for the club.
Sir Donald Trescowthick was instrumental in laying the foundations for making donations to sport, tax deductible through the Australian Sports Foundation. This not only paved the way for Geelong Football Club, along with other clubs who followed suit, but paved the way for all sports.
Sir Donald Trescowthick was awarded Life Membership in 1998 for his outstanding contribution to the Geelong Football Club and we will be forever grateful for his dedication and support in securing our future and the part he played in where we are today.
The players will be wearing black arm bands this week in his honour and that of his wife of 72 years Lady Trescowthick, who passed away on 16 March 2024.
Our thoughts are with Adam, and the entire Trescowthick family.
Fly high Sir Donald!
