Geelong has signed 203cm basketballer Joe Furphy as a Category B rookie for the 2024 season.
Furphy, 24, who grew up in Melbourne played one game for the Northern Knights in 2018 before opting to pursue a professional basketball career.
Since deciding to head down the basketball path, Furphy has represented multiple Victorian junior basketball representative teams.
On Furphy’s signing, Geelong Cats General Manager – Football Andrew Mackie said, “Joe is a raw product who has some very exciting attributes. He has a big leap and other traits that we are keen to develop.
“Basketball and Australian rules football have a lot of transferrable skills and as a Club, we are excited to see what Joe can do as part of our development program.
“With Joe already spending time in various different sporting environments, we feel he is well placed to take on the challenge of being an AFL player.”
“It is a pretty surreal feeling, to be honest,” Furphy said on signing with the Cats.
“Geelong is such a great club with rich history and strong values. I’m thankful for the opportunity to pursue a football career and I’m looking forward to starting pre-season.”
Currently studying a Bachelor of Space Science at RMIT University, having completed a Bachelor of Marketing in Business, Furphy comes from a sporting family with his brother and sister both at College in the United States with basketball and soccer scholarships respectively.
Furphy will join his Geelong teammates in November when the Club returns for 2024 pre-season training.
