Jack Bowes at training during the 2023 pre-season.

Jack Bowes is enjoying settling into Geelong’s midfield group as training ramps up ahead of the 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

Bowes, who played predominantly in defence for the Suns in recent seasons, has slotted well into the group, working with assistant coach Shaun Grigg and taking the opportunity to learn from the Cats’ elite midfield stars.

“It’s been really good working with Shaun Grigg in there, learning the game plan, a few tips and tricks,” Bowes said.

“Cam (Guthrie), Paddy (Dangerfield) and ‘Blitz’ (Mark Blicavs) have been really awesome so far. I’m really looking forward to getting to know them more and connecting more, and just building that continuity over the pre-season.”

Heading into his seventh AFL season, Bowes said he had been training through various roles as he looks to familiarise himself with the Cats’ game plan.

“It’s been good – I’ve been training in a few different positions, getting to know the game plan from all different angles on the ground, so I’ve really enjoyed that so far,” he said.

“Coming into my seventh season now, it’s all about being consistent week-in, week-out. I know my routine, I know how to get up for games, so I’m just trying to make sure I can find a little one-percent here and there throughout the week to make sure I can keep improving.

“Hopefully I can bring something to the group this year.”

The 24-year-old joined Geelong during the trade period, alongside Ollie Henry (from Collingwood) and Tanner Bruhn (from Greater Western Sydney).

For Henry and Bruhn, the move back to the Geelong region has been a football reunion.

The good mates went to school together, and came up through the junior pathways at the Geelong Falcons, before embarking on their AFL journeys at different clubs.

“It’s always nice when you’ve got a connection growing up with someone and playing with them, there’s been a few already in this team,” Henry said.

“It’s always nice to have that, and you can always count to lean on each other when you need it.”

The familiar faces don’t stop there for Henry, who has been training alongside brother Jack, albeit in opposite positions.

“I’m forward and he’s down back, and it’s pretty nice to get a bit of a challenge out of him,” Henry said.

“He’s pretty experienced, so it’s been nice. He’s always been a cool head to lean on.”

Bruhn said he is enjoying the opportunity to be among his family and friends at home, and was looking forward to his first season in the Hoops.

“I think it’s really important to me – I’m just really excited to be back home with everyone,” Bruhn said.

“It’s great to be at the Cats – they’re such a great club, and they’ve had so much success over quite a period of time. I’m lucky to be here.

“It’s been really enjoyable so far. The group is in a great spot, and the boys are firing and they’re ready to go. I’m keen to get stuck into it over the next few weeks, and am really looking forward to it.”
