GEELONG has concluded its AFLW campaign with an 18-point loss to GWS at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night.

The Cats started the Round 10 contest on fire early kicking three of the opening four goals. However, it was the Giants who proved too strong with a 5.5 (35) to 8.5 (53) victory.

After going goalless last round, it didn’t take long for the Cats to hit the scoreboard this week with Becky Webster converting inside the opening 22 seconds after weaving some magic in attack.

Goals to key forwards Kate Darby and Phoebe McWilliams followed as the Cats opened a 12-point advantage inside eight minutes.

The Giants needed to respond, and it was Katie Loynes who answered the call, adding to the earlier goal by Cora Staunton, cutting Geelong’s advantage to seven points at quarter time.

Geelong started the second term in promising fashion with Chloe Scheer extending the Cats lead as Amy McDonald (25 disposals, 12 tackles) and Georgie Prespakis (19 disposals, 13 tackles) started to get on top in the middle.

However, despite a lopsided inside 50 count in the first half it was the Giants who were more efficient as the Cats clung to a one-point lead into the main break.

Scheer added a second at the start of the third term, but Jessica Doyle responded with back-to-back goals as the Giants wrestled back the momentum and took a seven-point lead into the final term.

Julia Crockett-Grills did her best to inspire her teammates with two smothers in the final team, but the Giants proved too strong with Staunton the difference in attack with three majors in a best-on-ground performance.

Geelong ended the season with a 2-8 record but showed plenty of promising signs for the future.

From The Captain - Meg McDonald

"The fact that we have got a recognisable brand of football is really what we set out to achieve. Consistency is something that we are aiming for. When we are at our best we are looking really good, we've got pressure on the ball... So the process now is how do we produce that week in, week out, quarter in, quarter out... but then to add layers to it and to refine it more and more."

From The Coach - Dan Lowther

"A whole new list, new coaching staff, new approach to our program, which have all been positive. The first five or six weeks showed really good growth in our group and now it is about consistency and bringing those players along for the ride, making sure we stay the course and we buy into the change, which we have, they've done a beautiful job with their buy in. Now is about making sure we can compliment our group with other elements that will keep us in games for longer periods and make us more consistent which we are confident can happen over the next six months now."
