Isaac Smith booted 15 majors in 2021.

VETERAN Hawk Isaac Smith’s arrival in Geelong generated plenty of discussion.

Fans and critics were split over a once fearsome foe swapping his stripes to hoops, however Smith outperformed even the most optimistic of expectations in his first season at the club.

A fourth-placed Carji Greeves Medal finish underlined his importance in his first season at the club.

Smith made the wing position his own, roaming the length of GMHBA stadium to earn nearly 23 touches a game and providing a reliable scoring punch with 15 goals for the season.

Standout Moment

It didn’t take long for Smith to endear himself to the Geelong faithful.

Smith’s first match-winning finish for the Cats came in Round 2, putting the Cats ahead on the scoreboard with just three minutes remaining against the Lions.

The long-striding Cat put space on his opponent at the stoppage to take advantage of some Tom Hawkins ruck brilliance and snap truly from 15 metres out.

Stats File

At 32 years of age, Smith is still a leader when it comes to the running metrics.

Smith ran 16.2km twice this season, the second-best effort this year when it came to distance.

He was also the third fastest at the club in season 2021, recording a speed of 34.1 km/h in the Qualifying Final against Port Adelaide.

When it came to the number of sprints and defensive workrate, the first-year Cat ranked fourth in both categories.

Game-Breaking Performance

Smith’s remarkable consistency makes it hard to pick out just one match-changing performance.

What does stick out is the veteran Cat standing up when the chips are down.

Smith kicked two goals on four occasions in season 2021, with three of those efforts coming in Cats losses.

When Geelong was struggling to hit the scoreboard it was Smith who stood up, leading the charge against Adelaide in Round 1,  Melbourne in Round 4 and Brisbane in Round 15.

The Quote

Smith seems right at home in Geelong, taking to the town like a duck takes to water.

The laid-back Cat’s broad smile was a fixture on the training track.
