AFL Match Preview | Round 10 in the City of Churches

Everything you need to know ahead of Geelong's clash with Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) on Saturday afternoon

Geelong head back to the Adelaide Oval for the second time this year, as they prepare to take on Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) on Saturday afternoon.

The Cats will be searching for their sixth win of the season in Round 10, returning to a venue that they have had plenty of success at in recent times.

This week's challenge is no easier however, with Geelong facing a Power team that is capable of playing an exciting brand of footy.

Check out all the key details ahead of Saturday afternoon's clash below.

    KEY DETAILS

    2025 AFL Season - Round 10
    Yartapuulti v Geelong Cats
    Adelaide Oval, Adelaide - Kaurna
    Saturday 17th May, 4.15pm (AEST)

    TEAM SELECTION

    KEY PLAYER TO WATCH

    Tom Atkins

He has been sensational so far in 2025, but Tom Atkins will be even more important this weekend against an impressive Yartapuulti midfield.

Featuring the likes of Zak Butters and Jason Horne-Francis, the Power have been one of the best clearance teams in the league this year, but Atkins matches them defensively ranked as the number one tackler (10.2 per game) in the competition.

Atkins collected 23 disposals and nine clearances in his last trip to Adelaide Oval, averaging over 18 disposals and five clearances per game so far in the 2025 season.

He is important to the Cats both offensively and defensively, but Atkins will certainly be one to watch against the Power on Saturday afternoon.

RECENT HISTORY - Geelong v Yartapuulti

Over the last two decades the Cats hold a staggering record against the Power winning 24 of the last 31 clashes, but a more recent history has proven this to be a very even match-up.

The Cats only hold a narrow advantage over the Power in the last five years, with Geelong winning six of the last ten games against Yartapuulti dating back to the 2020 AFL season.

Geelong triumphed by 84-points in their most recent outing against the Power in last year's Qualifying Final, while also defeating Yartapuulti in two of the last three clashes at Adelaide Oval.

    VENUE HISTORY - Adelaide Oval

Geelong holds one of the strongest records of any visiting team at Adelaide Oval, having won six of their last seven games at the venue dating back to 2022.

Often considered one of the hardest road-trips in football, the Cats have found plenty of success winning 13 of 22 games at Adelaide Oval since the venue opened in 2014.

11 of those matches have come against Port Adelaide, with Geelong winning six times.

AFL Match Report | Cats Storm to Dominant Win in Adelaide

Geelong has recorded an impressive win over the Power on Saturday afternoon

A second half onslaught has inspired a dominant Geelong victory on Saturday afternoon, taking down Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) by 76 points at Adelaide Oval.

The game was in the balance at half time with the Cats holding an 11-point lead at the main break, before Geelong put the foot down and pulled away booting 12 goals to two in a sensational second half.

Jeremy Cameron was the standout for the Cats finishing the afternoon with a season-high tally of seven goals, five of those coming in the last quarter to spearhead his side to an impressive win.

Bailey Smith (30 disposals, seven clearances) continues to impress in his first season with Geelong, Mark O'Connor (28 disposals, 10 intercept possesions) was instrumental down back, while Ollie Dempsey (24 disposals, two goals) and Gryan Miers (27 disposals) split the game open with their run and carry.

Oisin Mullin also played a pivotal role in Saturday's win, playing a lockdown role on Port Adelaide star, Zak Butters and restricting him to 20 disposals and three clearances, his lowest total in both categories for the year.

    08:15

Conditions were tough early as both teams struggled to gain ascendancy, Geelong booting the opening two goals of the match to take a slender three point lead into the first break.

The arm wrestle continued into the second term with the Power kicking the only goal in the first 20 minutes of the quarter, before Jeremy Cameron intervened and swung momentum back the Cats way.

Back to back goals from the Cats spearhead catapulted his team back into the lead, Geelong taking an 11-point buffer into the main break.

Mark O'Connor was heavily influential down back in the opening half, leading the game in disposals (17), marks (six), metres gained (445) and intercept possessions (seven), while going at a very impressive 94% disposal efficiency.

    02:43

Geelong made their big move after half time, slamming home five goals to one in the third quarter to open up a healthy 36-point buffer heading into the final term.

Ollie Dempsey made his presence felt with a dominant period on the wing collecting 11 disposals, six score involvements and 345 metres gained in the third quarter alone.

Looking to close out the match, Jeremy Cameron snuffed out any chance of a Yartapuulti comeback as he slotted a hat-trick of goals inside the first eight minutes of the final quarter.

Geelong opened the floodgates and piled on the goals, eventually kicking away on the back of a 12 goal to two second half to claim a scintillating 76-point win over the Power.

    00:50

The Cats extend their strong record at Adelaide Oval, now winning seven of their last eight matches at the venue.

Geelong will return home for another blockbuster clash next week, as they take on the Western Bulldogs at GMHBA Stadium on Thursday night.
