Sam Simpson has returned from his hamstring injury.

CATS midfielder Sam Simpson has had a promising return from injury in a convincing Geelong scratch match victory over Richmond.

Simpson kicked two goals in a full four quarters of football, positioned all over the ground as he showed no signs of his extended layoff.

The mobile Cat and last year’s VFL Best and Fairest last played in Round 12 against Port Adelaide, suffering a left hamstring tear in the blowout victory.

“It was pretty frustrating, I did the hammy a few weeks ago and had a little hiccup on the way back,” Simpson says.

“It was good to be back running around the with Bankers (Bendigo Bank Cats) again today.

“I moved around a bit, started forward, mid and wing so it was good to get that exposure in all positions and hopefully found a bit of the footy which was nice."

Players from Port Adelaide topped up the numbers for both Richmond and Geelong.

Simpson was one of Geelong’s strongest performers, alongside Quinton Narkle who dominated from the midfield.

Narkle also managed to boot two majors, while commanding the clearances and displaying his trademark powerful contested ball winning ability.

“Narks was looking really energetic today which was good,” Simpson says.

“He played really well to his strengths, using that stiff arm and getting a lot of the footy.”

Quinton Narkle performed strongly in the midfield.

Josh Jenkins lead the way up forward, kicking three goals from set shots and marking strongly on each occasion, while Constable and Fogarty complemented Narkle in the engine room.

“JJ was really good, he kicked three goals today and if he didn’t kick it, he made a contest and brought it down to us small forwards and looked after us there,” Simpson says.

“I thought the midfielders were really good, there was a really good balance in there.

“Chooka Contstable and Lachie Fogarty (were good), you’re probably hearing the same names each week but it’s a real credit to them, they continue to back it up and play the right way.”

Jake Tarca and Jacob Kennerley as managed two goals apiece, while Jordan Clark kicked one of his own on the run from the 50-metre arch.

Jake Tarca continued his good form.

Simpson will be staying ready in case his number is called at the selection table.

“You want to be playing finals footy, this is the most exciting time of year really. It’s good to be back in now and pushing my case.

“That’s out of my hands, we’ll wait and see how that goes but I’ll do all the right things in the meantime.”
