AFLW star Meg McDonald will be a guest speaker at the Online Wear It Purple panel discussion.

Geelong Football Club is proud to be partnering with Deakin University to show our united support of LGBTQ+ young people through several online activities for Wear It Purple Day on Friday 28 August.

Wear it Purple Day is an international movement aimed at fostering supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual, Intersex and Queer/Questioning) young people.

The theme for this year is 'We are the change'.

As part of the day we are planning online activities and targeted communications including discussions and storytelling sessions - featuring various sporting ambassadors including our very own AFLW star Meg McDonald.

We recognise the rights of LGBTIQ+ people to learn, live and work, free of prejudice and discrimination, with all the essential freedoms enjoyed by other members of our community and the broader population. Compared to the general population, LGBTIQ+ young people (aged 16-27) are five times more likely to attempt suicide.

“This initiative aligns with the clubs long running commitment supporting the LGBTQ+ community particularly within the Greater Geelong Region through the AFL Barwon Pride Cup, staff education, Pride Supporter Group and local youth programs,” General Manager of Community Sarah Albon said.

“Both Deakin and the Geelong Cats are committed to providing a safe, fun and inclusive environment for all people, including those of diverse sexualities and genders.”

Join us and wear purple this Friday to show LGBTIQ+ young people in Geelong and across the world that there are people in the community who support them and that they can be proud of who they are.
