From celebrating our annual Djilang game to the Bethany Superhero initiative, the Cats in the Community team have been doing some great work, proudly presented by Barwon Water.

Djilang

The annual Djilang match was held on Sunday as part of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

The annual game showed that we can be Djilang Willem baa Warriyt (“Geelong Strong - At home or far away” in Wadawurrung language, note: There is not a word for ‘or’ so represented as ‘and’).

In 2020 the Djilang program needed to pivot due to the impacts of Covid-19. Yarning, art sessions, language education and kick to kick moved to virtual chats via Zoom where our Aboriginal players Quinton Narkle, Brandon Parfitt, Nakia Cockatoo, Blake Schlensog and Nathan Krueger connected with many Aboriginal people to celebrate culture.

Patrick Dangerfield spoke with our Aboriginal players in the lead up to the Djilang match.

Bethany Superhero Awards

Not all superheroes wear capes and children across the state will explore this when they have the opportunity to identify and nominate their own superhero in an initiative by Bethany Community Support.

The competition invites primary aged children to nominate their local hero for one of three award categories: Family and Friends, Teachers or Coaches and Community.

To promote this Jed Bews, Oscar Brownless and Zac Guthrie recently checked in with a couple of schools to talk about the importance of positive adult role models and share stories of their own superheroes.

Through the use of technology, Jed, Oscar and Zach virtually spoke with children from Warrnambool East Primary School and Fyans Park Primary School about what a superhero means to them, how some of these superhero traits are not only on field but off, and what their superhero means to them also shared who their very own heroes are.

Children are invited to nominate their superhero by writing a poem or a story, drawing a picture including photographs or creating a video to describe why their special person is a superhero!

Entries will close on Friday 18 September.
