Chris Scott says he'll be happy to select Cameron Guthrie for the Cats' premiership season opener against Fremantle even if the star midfielder doesn't play another pre-season match.

Guthrie, who is battling a calf injury, won't make the trip to Adelaide to take on the Crows this weekend and is in doubt for Geelong's final JLT Community Series match against Essendon in Bendigo.

But the Cats' coach remains upbeat about Guthrie's chances of lining up against the Dockers.

“We don’t think it’s necessary for him to play [again in the JLT Community Series] to be available for Round 1,” Scott told the Geelong Advertiser.

“He’s had a really good preparation up to this point.

"There’s still a chance he’ll play [against Essendon] but if he doesn’t, we don’t consider it to be a problem.”

Meanwhile, Scott Selwood's pre-season has been interrupted by a problem with his big toe.

But Scott says the injury is "minor".
