Geelong and Brisbane have been playing out thrilling clashes for a number of years, it almost seems to be second nature for the two teams.

The underrated rivalry extends back a long way, including an incredible shootout in the final round of the 2013 season.

At the conclusion of the penultimate round in the home and away season, the Cats sat in second position on the ladder and needed a victory over Brisbane to secure a home Qualifying Final.

The game was equally as important for the Lions, who had the chance to jump into the top eight with a win and would then wait out the remainder of the round to see if other results fell their way.

In a match with so much on the line, it was only fitting that the result would come down to nearly the final kick of the day, in a frantic final minute that could have easily gone either way.

05:30

Geelong started sprightly in front of a packed house at Kardinia Park, registering six of the first seven scoring shots and booting three goals in quick succession to take an early lead.

They would add another two before the end of the first term, but Brisbane also responded with some scoreboard impact of their own, limiting Geelong's lead to 14 points at quarter time.

James Kelly extended Geelong's advantage less than 90 seconds into the second quarter, but what followed was a remarkable momentum shift that left the Cats faithful stunned.

A run of four unanswered goals and six majors in the quarter completely flipped the contest on its head, Tom Rockliff was running riot through the middle and Ash McGrath had three goals before the main break.

After a hot start, Geelong all of a sudden trailed by six points at half time despite the best efforts of Mathew Stokes and Jimmy Bartel.

The Cats needed a response in the third term and it certainly came around the ground, but a wave of inaccuracy overcame the playing group and limited their damage where it mattered most.

Seven of the first eight scoring shots after half time went Geelong's way, but they remarkably only managed one goal and balanced out by McGrath's fourth goal, the Lions kept their noses in front 20-minutes into the quarter.

McGrath would add a fifth and was causing all sorts of headaches, but the Cats finally readjusted the radar and finished the term with three unanswered goals, their 14 scoring shots in the quarter giving the home side a 20-point lead heading into the final term.

Josh Caddy opened the fourth quarter with a quick goal to give the Cats a game-high 26-point advantage, seemingly staving off the Lions' challenge and doing enough to clinch a top-two spot on the ladder.

But there was one final twist in the tale still to come, and yet another resurgence from Brisbane.

McGrath kicked his sixth goal, Josh Green and Jordan Lisle both added two of their own and with time winding down, the Lions pulled back within a kick in a grandstand finish at the Cattery.

Joel Selwood provided a steadying goal at the 26-minute mark, but Brisbane still had a final chance to snatch the game in the dying moments.

From a stoppage deep inside their forward 50, Ryan Lester had a quick snap with four seconds remaining, but it dropped short and Paul Chapman was able to thump the footy over the line for a rushed behind.

It proved to be the game's final play, Geelong clinging on to win by a single point to secure a top-two finish, while simultaneously ending Brisbane's season.

The high-scoring affair saw the Cats finish with 12 different goal-kickers, while Stokes and Bartel (both 35 disposals) led the way through the middle of the ground.
