Geelong has produced another dominant performance under lights on Friday night, running out convincing winners over Box Hill with a commanding 19.9 (123) to 11.10 (76) victory at GMHBA Stadium.
The Cats delivered a commanding opening half against the Hawks, surging ahead with a dominant first-quarter display built on midfield control and scoreboard efficiency.
Jack Bowes was simply sensational both through the midfield and across half back, amassing a game-high 39 disposals and seven clearances in a complete four-quarter performance, while also pushing forward to kick three goals.
George Stevens continued his strong start to the season with another 26 disposals and two goals against the Hawks, while Lenny Hofmann (26 disposals) and Hunter Holmes (21 disposals) shone in a promising showing from Geelong's young brigade.
Wasting no time asserting their dominance, Geelong piled on 8.1 (49) to 4.0 (24) in an explosive opening term. Captain Dan Capiron led from the front in impressive fashion, booting four goals in the first quarter alone in a standout individual performance that set the tone for the night.
Alongside him, Will White provided an important secondary target, kicking two first-quarter goals while also contributing around the ground. Through the midfield, the Cats were firing with Mitch Knevitt (11 disposals, three clearances) and James Worpel (six disposals in the opening term) significant in driving the ball forward.
Geelong’s midfield continued to dictate terms beyond the opening quarter, consistently winning the contest and generating repeat inside 50 opportunities.
In the ruck, Rhys Stanley gave Geelong first use, collecting eight disposals and dominating the hit-outs with 17, while Joe Pike provided support in the contest.
Capiron’s early influence proved pivotal, setting a standard that carried through the group for the remainder of the match. His leadership and scoreboard impact in the opening stages created the platform for the Cats’ eventual success.
Bowes elevated his impact to even greater heights after half time, finishing off an outstanding all-round performance that combined composure and scoreboard presence. His three goals came at important moments, while his work through the midfield ensured Geelong consistently drove the game on their terms.
Fellow midfielder George Stevens continued his strong showing across the four quarters, using the ball effectively and providing stability around stoppages. His ability to win possession and distribute cleanly was crucial in maintaining the Cats’ momentum.
After an encouraging debut the previous week, Hunter Holmes backed it up with another composed performance. Growing in confidence as the game progressed, Holmes found his rhythm across the ground and continued to show promising signs in his early outings at the club.
New recruit James Worpel was again a standout in the midfield, finishing with an influential performance built on strength at the contest and consistency across all four quarters. His ability to win the ball at stoppages and drive it forward was a defining feature of Geelong’s dominance through the middle.
While the midfield laid the foundation, Geelong’s consistency across all areas of the ground ensured the result was never in doubt. The forward line remained efficient and dangerous, while the defence held firm to limit Box Hill’s scoring opportunities despite periods of pressure.
Steadily building the lead throughout a solid opening three quarters, Geelong built an unassailable lead heading into the final break and despite a goalless last term, still claimed a 47 point victory over the Hawks.
Geelong's next big test will come in a Saturday afternoon blockbuster, when they venture up the highway to take on Werribee at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval.
