The equation is simple for Geelong, they simply need to keep on winning in order to mount a challenge for the 2025 AFLW Finals series.

This week's challenge is a rising West Coast Eagles team that has claimed some strong victories this year, currently sitting in eighth spot on the ladder.

It is the proverbial eight-point game this Friday night, with Geelong a chance to jump into the top eight with a big win over the Eagles and if other results fall their way across the weekend.

Recent History - Geelong v West Coast

This has been a favourable matchup for Geelong in recent times, winning their last three matches against West Coast dating back to the start of 2022.

The Cats also proved that they can do it on the road when they defeated the Eagles last year, storming to a 33-point win behind a six-goal haul from Aishling Moloney.

Georgie Prespakis (27 disposals, nine clearances) was at her brilliant best in that match, while Rachel Kearns picked off 10 intercept possessions to help lead a strong defensive effort.

Deakin Performance Stat of the Week - Contested Possessions

While West Coast do not amass large numbers of disposals like other teams in the competition, they do excel around contested situations and have been strong this year when games are not free flowing.

The Eagles rank fourth in the AFLW this year for contested possessions per game, with 50.8% of all their possessions coming in contested situations, the third highest average of any team in the league.

By comparison, they rank second last for total uncontested possessions per game, showing that they are far stronger in matches that are tighter and more heavily contested.

West Coast's 2025 Possession Stats

Statistic Average Per Game AFLW Rank
Contested Possessions 121.4 4th
Contested Possession % 50.8 3rd
Uncontested Possessions 117.8 17th

Eagles Player to Watch - Ella Roberts

The standout player for West Coast this year has been superstar midfielder Ella Roberts, ranking among the competition's best players in a number of different statistics throughout 2025.

Roberts averages 22.7 disposals per game and has accumulated the 17th most disposals of any player in the AFLW, also sitting in the competition's top 20 for inside-50s, clearances, tackles and score involvements.

Speaking of the Eagles' contested possession prowess, Roberts ranks fourth in the AFLW for total contested possessions this season with an average of 14.3 per game.

What also sets Roberts apart is her ability to hit the scoreboard, kicking seven goals for the year which is the most by any West Coast player in 2025.

Where Geelong Can Improve - Stopping the Scoring Flow

Geelong were strong in most areas of the ground last week against GWS, but at times they tended to leak a lot of scoring shots from minimal inside 50 entries.

Through the first three quarters of last week's match, the Giants had only entered their forward-50 22 times but managed to convert that into 11 scoring shots and five goals.

At times this season the Cats defence has looked a little shaky, conceding an average of 45 points per game to opposition teams which is the highest average of any team in the top 10 on the ladder.
