Geelong’s 2023 playing squad continues to take shape, with Sam Simpson the latest player to put pen to paper.

Simpson has signed a one-year contract extension for 2023, taking his time at the Cats into a seventh season.

Making his debut in 2017, Simpson has played 19 games for the Cats, nine of those in 2020 including the Grand Final against Richmond.

The 24-year-old’s start to the 2022 season was halted when he suffered a concussion in pre-season which sidelined him.

After working his way diligently through his rehabilitation program, Simpson made his return to in the Cats Round 17 VFL team against Carlton at IKON Park, finishing with 22 disposals to be named in Geelong’s best. He then went on to play in the Cats’ final three VFL games of the season.

Geelong General Manager of Football Simon Lloyd said the Club was looking forward to Simpson continuing his career in the hoops in 2023.

“First and foremost Sam is a quality young man who worked enormously hard and diligently over several months to get back to playing football this season.

“Sam has the ability to play as an inside midfielder, defender or half forward and we’ve seen enough in his 19 AFL games to recognise his talent and strong work ethic.

“We know with Sam’s professionalism he will continue to develop his game and we look forward to seeing Sam at senior level again in 2023.”

Simpson’s re-signing follows those of Tom Atkins, Zach Guthrie, Tom Hawkins, Zach Tuohy and Isaac Smith last month. The Club also welcomed Tanner Bruhn, Jack Bowes and Ollie Henry to the Club during the AFL Trade Period.

Geelong will finalise its 2023 playing squad later this month after the AFL National and Rookie Drafts.
