Geelong’s team in the annual TAC Unity Cup Gala Day enjoyed a great day of footy on Sunday, making it through to the open men's grand final.

The team, made up of 11 players from schools across Geelong’s northern suburbs, won their three round robin matches to book a spot in the grand final, eventually going down to Team New Zealand in the decider.

The Unity Cup is an annual event, run by AFL Victoria, which encourages people from culturally diverse backgrounds who are new to Australian football or not currently engaged in the sport to give footy a go.

Hundreds of young Victorians took part in Sunday’s event at La Trobe University in Bundoora across a range of age groups.

For the Geelong team, the day started on a pleasing note on the field with a 20-point win in their first match, with games being played in two 15-minute halves.

Geelong followed up with a close win over Team New Zealand in their second clash of the day, and had a big win in their third round robin game.

Geelong took on Team New Zealand, who’d won their other pool matches, in the decider, but it was the New Zealand side which claimed the title.

Geelong Cats multicultural development officer Titit Nyak, who coached the team, said all participants had a great day at the event.

“They all just came up on the day and they all gelled as a team and played together,” he said.

“Most of them knew each other beforehand, so there was a lot of joking around. It was just a day of having fun and good times.”

Mr Nyak said while some of the players play football regularly, others came from different sporting backgrounds, including soccer.

The team will celebrate its efforts with a reunion at GMHBA Stadium, where they are planning to watch the Round 4 game between the Geelong Cats and Brisbane Lions together.
