Match Preview | All Roads Lead to the 'G

September is here and Geelong are set to kick off their Finals campaign, with a massive battle against Carlton awaiting on Friday night

The day has arrived, Geelong are set to kick off their September campaign with a Friday night blockbuster, as they prepare to take on Carlton at the MCG.

The stakes could not be higher, with the winner to progress and keep their season alive while the loser is eliminated from the 2026 season, all set to take place in front of a packed house at the 'G.

Geelong are familiar with this time of year, set to embark on their 18th Finals campaign in the last 20 years, while also marking their 14th appearance during Chris Scott's tenure as head coach.

It certainly will not be an easy outing for the Cats, as they take on a Carlton team carrying plenty of momentum, having only suffered defeat in two of their last 15 matches.

But Geelong will also have an abundance of confidence after finishing the home-and-away season on a six-game winning streak, while also coming off the bye week to rest and rejuvenate before attacking Friday night.

With so much to look forward to, take one last glance ahead to Friday night's monumental clash at the MCG, proudly presented by Lee Kum Kee.

    TEAM SELECTION

    RECENT FORM

They were the hottest teams in the competition heading into September, but only one can advance and momentum will certainly play a part as the two teams square off at the MCG.

Geelong could not have asked for much more in the latter part of the regular season finishing on a six-game winning streak, which included victories over the likes of Melbourne and Collingwood.

What really impressed was the Cats' ability to score, finishing with 100 points or more in five of their last six games and a lowest score of 97 points, averaging 115.2 points per game across that span.

Carlton were also dominant in recent weeks, recording five wins and a draw from their last six games, averaging 107.5 points per game across that span.

They have also been very sound defensively, only conceding one score of 100 points or more in their last 15 games, setting up an enthralling battle in an Elimination Final.

    LAST TIME WE MET

A highly entertaining contest in Round 12 at the MCG, the two sides went toe-to-toe in a match that came down to nearly the last kick of the match, with Carlton prevailing by four points.

Geelong were coming off a brutal stretch in their schedule, which included matches against Collingwood, Brisbane at the Gabba and Sydney, but still pushed the Blues until the final siren with a Jack Henry goal putting the Cats in front at the 28-minute mark of the final term.

Tom Stewart (22 disposals, six intercepts) and Connor O'Sullivan (five intercept marks) held down the fort defensively, consistently repelling dangerous Carlton attacks and helping to limit the damage at crucial stages in the game.

Bailey Smith (35 disposals) found plenty of the footy, Jeremy Cameron (four goals, nine score involvements) created plenty of scoring opportunities, while Ollie Dempsey (two goals, 426 metres gained) generated plenty of run on the wide expanses of the MCG.

LEE KUM KEE - PIVOTAL MATCH-UP

    Jay Polkinghorne v Harry Dean

It is bizarre that going into a crunch Final, the attention is not all on the experienced players and those that have stood tall on the biggest stage before, but such has been the impact of these two young talents that it would be remiss not to discuss this mouthwatering match-up.

Jay Polkinghorne entered Geelong's team six weeks ago and has not put a foot wrong, proving to be a reliable target inside 50 and kicking 13 goals across that span, helping to guide the Cats to six consecutive victories.

What has been most impressive is the young forward's aerial ability, consistently crashing packs and pulling down 19 marks inside 50 across his six AFL games, while also registering 29 score involvements from 47 total disposals.

His likely match-up will be against Harry Dean, Carlton's defensive sensation who has impressed in his debut season, finishing second in the AFL's Rising Star award and collecting a game-high 11 intercept possessions in last week's Wildcard win over Melbourne.

Expect to see Polkinghorne flying for marks at every opportunity on Friday night, while also looking to keep Dean accountable in what will be a fascinating battle between two young stars.

Match Report | Season Rolls On for Clinical Cats

Geelong had to overcome an early challenge from Carlton, but their class shone through in a scintillating second half to progress to a Semi Final

You can simply never count these Cats out and despite a slow start in Friday night's Elimination Final, Geelong has stormed home to clinch an incredible 33-point victory over Carlton at the MCG.

The Cats conceded five of the opening six goals of the match and were struggling to split the big sticks themselves early, but flipped momentum with a run of three unanswered goals to end the opening half, before putting the foot down after the main break in a statement victory.

When Geelong were looking for a spark in difficult conditions, it was some of their smaller and craftier players that went to work, with Shaun Mannagh injected into the midfield, Oli Wiltshire dominating in the forward half and the brilliance of Gryan Miers coming to the fore.

Tom Stewart was exceptional across half back and provided plenty of composure in some big moments, Mitch Edwards was terrific in his first Final and helped to turn the tide through the middle, while Patrick Dangerfield proved to be the difference in front of goal.

Geelong's big victory on Friday night will see their 2026 season roll on, progressing through to a Semi Final against Fremantle next week at Optus Stadium.

With September football comes a heightened level of intensity, a pressure unlike anything else and a tension that can be felt right around the stadium, but it was something that Geelong struggled to adapt to early as Carlton gained momentum and kicked the opening two goals of the game.

The telling factor early was the Blues' dominance around stoppages and their ability to control the ball in transition, with Geelong's issues compounded by inaccuracy in front of goal, until Patrick Dangerfield landed Geelong's first blow with a brilliant snap from relatively long range.

But it would be a brief moment of respite amongst an otherwise disappointing opening term, as the Cats found themselves trailing by 16 points at quarter time.

Oli Wiltshire had some nice moments early in his first AFL Final, going at 100% disposal efficiency and adding two score involvements in the first term, while the ever-reliable Tom Stewart helped to limit the damage with four intercept possessions.

The second quarter continued in a similar fashion, both teams squandering chances and it took until the 14-minute mark for the first goal to be kicked, but unfortunately it went Carlton's way and made life even more difficult for the Cats.

Geelong were desperate for a spark and it came from an unlikely source, with Wiltshire producing two brilliant pieces of play and two goal assists, first setting up Gryan Miers and then hitting Brad Close with a perfect entry kick for back-to-back goals.

Another foray forward late in the term landed in the hands of Max Holmes and on his return from injury, the superstar made no mistake with the ensuing set-shot to drag the Cats back within just three points at half time.

It was a brilliant resurgence in what had been a tough and uncompromising contest to the main break, with plenty of Geelong's momentum coming off the back of some outstanding play from Wiltshire and Miers, who both recorded six score involvements in the opening half.

Stewart was rock solid in defence with seven intercept possessions and still went at 93% disposal efficiency, Shaun Mannagh was injected into the midfield and found 10 disposals in the second quarter alone, while Tom Atkins' hunt around the contest could not be overstated as one of the main factors in Geelong's turnaround.

Looking to capitalise on their momentum, it took the Cats less than a minute to hit the scoreboard with Mannagh curling home another major, putting his side in front for the first time since the five-minute mark of the opening term.

The game, which had been more of a defensive battle in the first half, started to open as Carlton responded with a pair of goals, before Geelong answered with three straight of their own.

Shannon Neale threaded the needle from a tight angle, Jay Polkinghorne added another from a set-shot, the Cats had five unanswered goals and remarkably, they took a 23-point lead into three quarter time.

Once again, Mannagh topped the stat sheet with 10 disposals and a goal in the third term, Bailey Smith started to work his way through a tight tag and found 10 possessions in the term, while the crafty Miers was proving instrumental with his decision-making and skill.

If there was any doubt heading into the final term, it was quickly quashed when Neale took a big contested mark and kicked his second of the night, helping to extend the lead.

The skipper then wound the clock back to bring the Cats faithful to their feet, piling on three consecutive goals to give Geelong an unassailable lead midway through the quarter.

The professional Cats outfit then did what they needed to do to close out the game, sealing an incredible 33-point victory in front of a packed house at the MCG.
