A big opportunity awaits Geelong on Friday night, with the chance to take a big scalp against a Finals contender under the bright lights at the MCG. 

It will be a relatively young Cats outfit that will take on Melbourne, particularly in the absence of Jeremy Cameron and Max Holmes, but there is plenty of talent right across the ground ready to make their presence felt on the big stage. 

Entering Round 20, Geelong sit in ninth position on the ladder and are two games outside of the top-six, but the Demons currently occupy sixth spot meaning the Cats can make serious inroads with a victory on Friday night. 

It will mark Geelong's first visit to the MCG since their Round 12 clash against Carlton, but it will be the first of a double-header at the venue with the Cats returning next Thursday to take on Collingwood. 

The stakes could not be higher and Geelong are set for a blockbuster battle, take a look ahead to Friday night's clash with Melbourne, proudly presented by Lee Kum Kee.

It has been nearly 16 months since Geelong last faced Melbourne, but it was an entertaining contest in Round 4 of the 2025 season with the Cats prevailing by 39 points at GMHBA Stadium. 

Despite periods of dominance, Geelong struggled to shake the plucky Demons outfit until the final quarter, where they kicked the final four goals of the match to seal the deal. 

Patrick Dangerfield (20 disposals, three goals) clinched the three Brownlow votes, while Gryan Miers (26 disposals) and Zach Guthrie (30 disposals) were also firmly among the Cats' best players. 

LEE KUM KEE - PIVOTAL MATCH-UP

Connor O'Sullivan v Jacob Van Rooyen

A battle between two emerging stars will take centre stage at the MCG, with a potential match-up between Connor O'Sullivan and Jacob Van Rooyen a chance to play out on Friday night. 

O'Sullivan has been absolutely phenomenal for Geelong this year, leading the Cats for intercept possessions and intercept marks, quickly evolving into one of the competition's best key defenders. 

Often entrusted on the last line of defence, O'Sullivan has been involved in the most contested defensive one-on-ones this year of any player in the competition, winning close to 80% of those contests. 

Van Rooyen has spearheaded Melbourne's attack this year and is in the midst of his best season at the elite level, already kicking 37 goals in 2026 which is seven goals more than any other season with the Demons. 

These two young stars could potentially spend time lined up against one another on Friday night, in a battle that could have a pivotal influence on the outcome of the match.

With four rounds remaining in the regular season, Geelong have remarkably already secured a top-two finish and will host a Qualifying Final, highlighting their incredible dominance throughout the 2026 campaign. 

On an 11-game winning streak and still 10 points clear on top of the ladder, the VFL Cats can clinch the minor premiership this week with a victory, as they take on the Casey Demons on Saturday afternoon. 

Last week, Geelong travelled to RSEA Park and staved off a strong challenge from St Kilda to secure a 26-point victory, led by strong performances from Jack Bowes (26 disposals), Joe Pike (15 disposals, 32 hit-outs) and Hunter Holmes (23 disposals, seven score involvements).

Geelong's Round 20 clash with Melbourne will be broadcast on Channel 7 from 7.30pm AEST, before the game commences at 7.40pm. 

The match will also be broadcast on Fox Footy and streamed through Kayo, with the coverage starting from 7.30pm.

The stakes could not have been higher on Friday night and as Geelong has done so often, they rose to the occasion, producing one of their best performances of the season to defeat Melbourne by 20 points at the MCG. 

In a battle between two sides vying for a spot in the top six on the ladder, the Cats staved off challenges both early and late in the contest from the Demons to clinch a crucial four points in the context of their season, spurred on by a sensational second-quarter surge. 

A number of Cats were phenomenal throughout the night, but perhaps none were better than Tom Stewart (25 disposals, 11 intercept possessions) who was an impenetrable force in defence, particularly having an outstanding influence on the contest in a tense final term. 

In attack, Shannon Neale helped to set the game up for Geelong with four goals in the first half, while Brad Close (seven score involvements) and Shaun Mannagh (eight score involvements) were terrific all night and created plenty of chances in front of goal. 

Connor O'Sullivan (12 intercept possessions) was also stoic in defence alongside Stewart, Tanner Bruhn and Tom Atkins were both key drivers through the midfield, while Oisin Mullin did another incredible job in nullifying the impact of Kysaiah Pickett. 

The Cats were under the pump early in the first term as Melbourne generated two quick goals from stoppage to open the contest, but Jay Polkinghorne helped to steady the ship with his first goal at the MCG in the second game of his AFL career. 

It sparked a relatively free-flowing quarter of football, Geelong struggled to contain the Demons in transition but Shannon Neale was able to capitalise on a pair of opportunities with two goals of his own, limiting the damage to 10 points at the first break. 

Geelong led the clearance battle at quarter time and the inside 50 count sat level, but Melbourne were more potent with their entries generating eight scoring shots to the Cats' three. 

Neale continued to announce himself on the big stage as he gave the Cats the perfect start in the second term, rising above a pack to take another big mark and kicking his third goal. 

Another Cat making his presence felt early was Tom Atkins, who showed he had the polish to match his tenacity with a nice finish in front of the big sticks, kicking Geelong's third unanswered goal and giving them the lead for the first time in the game. 

Momentum shifted and the Cats lifted right across the ground, matching their opponent in most major metrics and pouring on seven goals in the quarter alone, Geelong rising to the occasion and turning their early deficit into a 20-point lead at half time. 

When the Cats needed to set the tone, they looked to the familiar pairing of Tom Stewart (13 disposals) and Tom Atkins (16 disposals), the duo attacking each contest ferociously and often winning crucial battles to win the footy back. 

Neale was the standout inside 50 with four goals in the opening half, but he was closely matched by Brad Close who also brought plenty of intensity around the footy, registering seven score involvements from his 10 disposals. 

Tanner Bruhn (15 disposals) slotted back into the starting line-up seamlessly and found plenty of the footy early, while Mitch Edwards did a commendable job opposed to Max Gawn, winning three centre clearances and providing an aerial presence in marking contests. 

The fluency that Geelong had in their attacking half before the main break was not quite matched in the third term, squandering some looks in front of goal but Ollie Henry and Polkinghorne were both able to boot their second of the night, helping the Cats to maintain an 18-point buffer at the final break. 

Lawson Humphries was impactful across half back and helped to stem Melbourne's momentum, collecting nine disposals, six marks and four intercept possessions in the third quarter alone. 

With the pressure mounting in a tense final term, Geelong were able to continue their scoreboard impact through Oli Wiltshire and Ollie Henry, who both slotted crucial goals to help the Cats maintain their buffer. 

Then at a pivotal juncture in the match, Mark O'Connor nailed a difficult set-shot to extend Geelong's lead, before Wiltshire slammed the door shut with an exquisite finish on his left foot. 

The Cats then added more late goals to seal the victory, defeating Melbourne by 20 points at the MCG.
