AFLW Match Preview | An Important Clash at IKON Park

Geelong head to IKON Park on Sunday afternoon looking to record their second victory of the 2025 AFLW season

Nearing the midway point of the AFLW season, Geelong will be looking to build on last week's victory as they head to IKON Park to take on Richmond.

A dominant display last weekend saw the Cats secure their first win of the season, defeating Essendon by 31 points to kickstart their campaign.

It will be important for Geelong to capitalise on their opportunities, as they face a Richmond side this weekend that is still searching for their first win in 2025.

Check out all the important details as the Cats head to IKON Park on Sunday afternoon.

Match Details | AFLW Round 5

    Richmond v Geelong Cats
    Sunday September 14th
    Bounce: 1:05pm AEST
    IKON Park, Melbourne

    Last Time We Met

Geelong's most recent clash with Richmond was a thriller in Round 7 last year, the game coming down to the final few minutes but Richmond ultimately prevailed by seven points.

The Cats had their noses in front for much of the afternoon and held the lead at the 15 minute mark of the fourth quarter, before the Tigers struck two late blows to close the game out.

Aishling Moloney (22 disposals, one goal) and Jackie Parry (10 disposals, two goals) were dominant up forward, while Nina Morrison (22 disposals, seven clearances) and Becky Webster (21 disposals, four clearances) were both heavily influential.

    Team Selection

    Key Player To Watch

    Mikayla Bowen

How about the start to the season from dynamic Cat, Mikayla Bowen?

After collecting a career-high 27 disposals in Round 1, Bowen has backed it up with three more strong performances, amassing 24 disposals and nine tackles against Essendon last weekend.

As it currently stands, Bowen sits in the top three at Geelong for disposals, tackles, marks inside 50 and score involvements, while also sitting second in the AFLW for tackles inside 50.

Her impact has been significant across the opening month of the season, look for Bowen to continue that output against the Tigers on Sunday.

AFLW Match Report | Cats Register Second Consecutive Victory

Check out all the details from Geelong's win over Richmond at IKON Park.

Geelong have recorded back-to-back victories in what was an important win in the context of the Cats season, proving too strong for the Tigers in a 30 point triumph at IKON Park.

In what was a tough opening term, both teams took some time getting used to the blustery conditions which made scoring difficult. But after an early arm wrestle, unlikely first goalscorer Emma Kilpatrick broke the deadlock with four minutes to go in the quarter, kicking her first AFLW goal with a booming kick from 50 metres out.

The Cats had had the majority of the play with 10 inside 50’s to seven, but defended excellently when needed, led by Georgie Rankin who continued her striking form to start the season.

Aishling Moloney kicked off the scoring in the second quarter with a classic snap, as Richmond struggled to exit the Cats defensive 50. Geelong’s pressure was immense and they were able to convert intercept marks into goals, demonstrated by another first goalscorer in Caitlin Thorne coming from a mark from a kick out.

    05:42

The Cats were able to keep Richmond to just three points at the half.

Jackie Parry continued her fantastic form from last week with nine marks and two goals, a real presence in attack for the Cats.

Geelong’s midfield showed plenty of run and carry, with Georgie Prespakis in particular making numerous eye catching escapades forward. Amy McDonald and Nina Morrison were strong in the contest as usual and helped get things moving forward, while Claudia Gunjaca and Rachel Kearns combined for 19 intercept possessions down back.

Geelong’s pressure carried out through the rest of the game but it was some brilliant transition plays that coach Dan Lowther would be most impressed with. A Kate Kenny goal in the third quarter being a prime example of Geelong’s deadly ball movement from half back.

    02:16

Julia Crockett-Grills finished with two goals after getting to some good positions to finish off some great running plays, while Mikayla Bowen racked up 28 touches and had a hand in plenty of Geelong's scores, looking dangerous up forward.

Richmond rallied late and brought the margin back to 30 points, but the Cats had done what they needed to do to lock in their second win of the season.

Geelong will travel to Adelaide next week to take on Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Saturday at 1:05pm
