Match Preview | Round Three v Brisbane at the Gabba

Everything you need to know ahead of Geelong's blockbuster clash against Brisbane on Saturday night

Geelong are back in action tonight for their round three clash, as they prepare to take on Brisbane at the Gabba.

Wet and wild weather conditions are predicted for Saturday but that will not worry the Cats, who took down the Lions at the same venue in similar conditions less than 12 months ago.

It will be a chance to bounce back from last week's loss for Geelong, facing a Brisbane side that has started the year well with two consecutive wins.

Check out everything you need to know heading into Saturday night's match below.

    Round 3

    Gabba, Brisbane • QLD

    LAST TIME WE MET

The two teams squared off in one of the most entertaining games of the 2024 season, Geelong falling 10 points short in a heartbreaking Preliminary Final loss to Brisbane at the MCG.

A seven-goal second quarter gave Geelong the ascendancy in the opening half, the Cats keeping their noses in front late in the final term, before the Lions kicked the last two goals of the game to seal the result.

Ollie Henry (15 disposals, four goals) was immense and nearly dragged the Cats over the line, while Gryan Miers (20 disposals, two goals) and Tom Stewart (22 disposals, 12 intercepts) were both among Geelong's best.

    KEY PLAYER TO WATCH

    Max Holmes

Last time out at the Gabba in treacherous conditions, Max Holmes was immense accumulating 24 disposals and 668 metres gained, playing a massive role in Geelong's big win.

The Cats star collected eight intercept possessions and six inside 50s, landing two Brownlow votes for his display in conditions that are expected to be replicated once again this weekend.

Holmes copped a hard tag against St Kilda last week but still found ways to be influential, particularly in the second half and his performance will be crucial in round three if the Cats are to come away with a positive result.

AFL Match Report | Round Three

Catch up on all the action from Geelong's round three clash with Brisbane at the Gabba

Geelong took up the challenge to Brisbane in difficult conditions on Saturday night, but ultimately fell short as they slipped to a nine point loss at the Gabba.

The Cats shot out of the blocks with a dominant first half, opening up a 26-point lead at the main break but could not fend Brisbane off as the Lions mounted their comeback after half time.

Max Holmes impressed all night in tough conditions, finishing with 29 disposals and nine marks while also breaking the game open with his run and carry, recording a team high 620 metres gained.

Among the Cats best was Bailey Smith (25 disposals, 11 tackles) and Gryan Miers (22 disposals, eight marks), while Tom Atkins (14 disposals, 14 tackles) fought out a brilliant duel against Lachie Neale in a designated run-with role.

    00:47

Geelong started sprightly in the opening term, quickly adapting to the conditions and booting the first two goals of the contest as they built an eight point lead at the first break.

A run of five unanswered goals through the second quarter catapulted the Cats to a healthy buffer, taking a 26 point lead into the main break and looking in control of the contest.

But Brisbane were not going to simply lie down, booting four goals in the third term while keeping Geelong scoreless to flip the script, leaving the Cats facing a one-point deficit heading into the final break.

Geelong skipper, Patrick Dangerfield gave his side some momentum when he launched home a long range goal to start the last quarter, snatching the lead back for the Cats.

But it proved to be only momentary, as Brisbane regained ascendancy and booted the next three majors to ultimately close out the game, Geelong falling nine points short at the Gabba.

Saturday night's loss leaves the Cats at 1-2 to start their season, but they will look to bounce back next weekend as they take on Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night.
