AFL Match Preview | A Final Round Bout at the MCG

Catch up on all the details ahead of Saturday's clash with the Tigers

The final round of the AFL home and away season has arrived and the equation is simple for Geelong; beat Richmond on Saturday and secure a home Qualifying Final at the MCG.

Expect to see the ladder positions shuffle as Round 24 wears on, but the Cats can solidify their spot in the top two if they claim victory over the Tigers.

Saturday's game will be the second meeting between the two sides in 2025, with Geelong prevailing by 72 points against Richmond in Round 17 this year at GMHBA Stadium.

With the Cats looking to fine tune their game for September, take a look at all the main details ahead of Saturday's important clash at the MCG.

    KEY DETAILS

    2025 AFL Season - Round 24

    Richmond v Geelong Cats

    MCG, Melbourne

    Saturday August 23rd, 4.15pm (AEST)

    TEAM SELECTION

    KEY PLAYER TO WATCH

    Jeremy Cameron

It was an uncharacteristically quiet outing for Cameron against the Swans last week, just his second goalless game in his last 38 matches, but history suggests that the superstar is primed for a big day in Round 24.

After his last goalless game (Round 13), Cameron responded with a six goal haul against Essendon and kicked 14 majors across the next three weeks, facing a Richmond team that he had nine scoring shots against in the most recent clash.

Sitting on 79 goals for the season, a decent haul against the Tigers could keep the chase for a century alive but most importantly, Cameron will be looking to contribute heavily to help the Cats secure a spot in the top two.

RECENT HISTORY - Geelong v Richmond

Geelong have claimed victory in five of their last six matches against Richmond dating back to 2021, winning those games by an average of 41 points.

They have also won three of their last four against the Tigers at the MCG, which stopped a run between 2017 and 2020 where Richmond got the better of the Cats in six out of seven games.

Taking a look at a more extended history, Geelong had an incredible streak over Richmond between 2001 and 2017 where they defeated the Tigers in 20 out of 21 games.

    SEASON HOME AWAY GROUND
    2025 - Round 17 Geelong 18.16 (124) Richmond 7.10 (52) GMHBA Stadium
    2024 - Round 12 Geelong 15.9 (99) Richmond 10.9 (69) GMHBA Stadium
    2023 - Round 9 Richmond 16.6 (102) Geelong 11.12 (78) MCG
    2022 - Round 15 Geelong 13.11 (89) Richmond 13.8 (86) MCG
    2021 - Round 19 Geelong 15.5 (95) Richmond 8.9 (57) MCG

    VENUE HISTORY - MCG

Geelong have played four games at the MCG to this point in the 2025 season, winning three of them while claiming victory over Finals contenders like Collingwood and Hawthorn.

The Cats last game at the venue came in Round 14 against Essendon, when they cruised to a 95-point win on the back of a six-goal haul from Jeremy Cameron.

Round 24 could be a nice chance for the Cats to fine tune their game at the venue, a win on Saturday would see Geelong secure a Qualifying Final at the MCG a fortnight later.

    SEASON HOME AWAY
    2025 - Round 14 Essendon 8.8 (56) Geelong 23.13 (151)

AFL Match Report | Cats Secure Top Two Spot and a Home Qualifying Final

Geelong has locked in a top two spot after closing out a solid win over Richmond at the MCG on Saturday

Geelong has clinched a top two spot and locked in a home Qualifying Final, after cruising to a 39 point win over Richmond at the MCG on Saturday.

After gaining the ascendancy early, the Cats did what they needed to as they held Richmond goalless for a 68-minute period through the middle of the match, getting through the unscathed with September right around the corner.

Tom Stewart was sensational in defence for Geelong finishing with 23 disposals, nine intercept possessions and seven score involvements to continue his brilliant form.

The dynamic midfield duo of Bailey Smith (34 disposals, seven clearances) and Max Holmes (26 disposals) generated plenty of run and carry to spark the Cats ball movement, while Gryan Miers (26 disposals) featured prominently throughout the afternoon.

The milestones kept coming for Tom Atkins on Saturday, eclipsing the record for most tackles laid in a single season (202), in what was also his 150th AFL game.

    00:42

Back on the wide expanses of the MCG for the first time in 10 weeks, Geelong took no time getting going with a six goal opening term to build a healthy 29-point lead by quarter time.

Inaccuracy in front of the big sticks prevented the Cats from stretching the margin even further, registering 13 scoring shots in the first quarter alone, led by a dominant start from Ollie Dempsey who recorded five score involvements.

Geelong put the foot down in a dominant second term, slamming through five unanswered goals while holding Richmond to a solitary behind, the lead swelling out to 63-points at the main break.

The big takeaway from the first half was the Cats efficiency in their forward half, registering 23 scoring shots from 32 inside 50s for a conversion rate of 71.9%. Geelong have been the best rated team in the competition in that statistic this year with an average of 54%.

Tom Stewart (13 disposals, eight intercept possessions, six score involvements) patrolled half back with brilliance, Jeremy Cameron kicked three goals to move his season tally into the 80's, while Bailey Smith (18 disposals, six score involvements) was able to utilise his elite running capacity and found plenty of space.

    00:34

The Cats were sound defensively, keeping Richmond goalless for a 68-minute period between the first and third quarters but the scoring dried up for Geelong after half time, narrowly growing their lead to 65-points at the final break.

Gryan Miers and Tom Atkins found the footy with ease in the third term amassing 17 disposals between them, while Atkins also laid four tackles to tie the all time season record.

Holding an unassailable lead at three quarter time, Geelong did what they needed to in the final term as they closed out a 39 point victory.

The Cats will finish the home and away season in second position and will host a Qualifying Final, but will await the rest of the results this weekend to see who their opponent will be.
