The COVID-induced break to the VFL season added a minor speed bump to Geelong’s VFL campaign, with skipper Aaron Black saying it's nothing the boys can’t handle.

The Bankers’ captain has had a quality individual season in the limited matches played and proved invaluable with his leadership throughout defensive 50.

He said that, being in Geelong, the squad’s been fortunate to have a bit more freedom than Melbourne-based sides.

“We were lucky because we’re regional, we could actually train for two weeks before we played,” Black said.

“We had a practice game the week before last weekend’s game so I thought we had good prep and started the first quarter on fire.”

“We got in partners, went for a run and had a bit of a kick with our one partner and that was it so it wasn’t that bad.”

The planned bye for 17 July will now be replaced with a match against Coburg, leaving Geelong a solid run of matches to gather as much momentum as possible before finals.

Despite the disappointing loss to Footscray, it’s clear to the skipper how the team pulled up short and how they can improve.

“I reckon just as the game went on and got tighter we fell away a little bit from how we wanted to play,” Black

“Credit to [the Bulldogs], they set up really well defensively and then attacked off the back-end of that, but I reckon at times we tried to do a bit too much.”

“We were really hungry for the contest but we just had stuck to our structures a bit more and really grind it out and fight it out.”

“We’re still in a good spot so we should still be confident with where we’re at.”

The Bendigo Bank Cats will play Brisbane on Friday morning.

The Lions are currently sitting in 12th position on the VFL ladder with three wins and four losses, while Geelong remain in the finals hunt in 7th spot.

The match will begin at 11:30am at South Pine Sporting Complex and will be available to watch on Kayo Sports.
