Joel Selwood will lead Geelong for a tenth season after the Cats announced an unchanged player leadership group for the 2021 season at tonight’s season launch.

Selwood is supported by co-vice captains Patrick Dangerfield and Mark Blicavs, Mitch Duncan, Mark O’Connor, Tom Stewart and Zach Tuohy.

Since taking over the captaincy at the beginning of 2012, Selwood has led the Cats onto the field a club record 200 times. He is one of just six players in league history to log 200 games as a team captain, joining Stephen Kernahan (226 games as captain), Dick Reynolds (224), Nick Riewoldt (220), Ted Whitten (212) and Michael Voss (210).

In 2020, Selwood reached his 300-game milestone and in 2021, he will enter his 15th AFL season.

“We have an exceptional group of leaders at the club,” Geelong’s general manager of football Simon Lloyd said.

“The PLG takes a broad club-wide view, and that is a hallmark of the group. Joel is an experienced and inspirational captain, and the support he receives from his fellow leaders and the wider playing group has allowed us to develop a culture that has endured and thrived.

“This group led us so well during the difficult 2020 season. They have endured, thrived yet strive to get better and build their capabilities. They have the respect and trust of their peers and everyone at the club.”
