As 2019 comes to a close we look back at some of the top moments of the decade.

The introduction of Geelong’s inaugural AFLW team in 2018 was monumental in the club’s 160-year history.

It has led to substantial growth of women’s football and provided a pathway for young female footballers in the region and help them in their aspirations to play AFLW.

“I think one of the most important things that has happened in the last decade has been the introduction of the AFLW, and then more recently for us as a footy club, our introduction into the competition and what it meant for our community and what it meant for our club,” star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield said.

“Having the AFLW come in has really rounded us out as a football club and as a club for the community, its meant volumes for young girls and young women that there is a talent pathway to play locally for the Geelong Cats.”

Brandan Parfitt has fond memories of the first game which drew a home crowd of 18,429.

“It was pretty special. I was up at the top of the wing in the Player’s Stand and they won by a point in the end and it was an unreal day for the club,” Parfitt said.

It was a true celebration of women’s football with Geelong recording a thrilling one-point win against Collingwood.

First round pick Nina Morrison’s poster at the 12-minute mark of the fourth term proving the difference, as the Cats defended grimly in the final stages to record their first win.
