The Geelong Cats have placed small forward Lincoln McCarthy on the long-term injury list as he recovers from surgery on his left foot.

McCarthy underwent surgery on his troublesome foot in early March with recovery expected to keep the 21-year-old sidelined for up to five months.

McCarthy has played five AFL games since his debut in 2012 including the Cats semi-final loss to North Melbourne last year.

The club now has the option of upgrading a rookie-listed player to the senior list.
