Geelong star midfielders Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield have been named in the All-Australian 40-man squad for 2017, though two Cats could consider themselves unlucky to miss out.

Dangerfield looms likely for the fifth All-Australian selection of his career, averaging 30.3 disposals from 21 games in 2017. The 27-year-old ranks first in the AFL for contested possessions and clearances, second for inside 50’s and has kicked 38 goals.

If selected as part of the final 22-man side, Selwood would receive All-Australian honours for the sixth time, having been named captain in 2013 and 2016. The Cats’ skipper averaged 25.8 disposals from 18 games and ranks fifth for total centre clearances and fourth for centre clearances per game.

Mitch Duncan and Zach Tuohy, however, are notable omissions from the initial squad, after both players pieced together stellar seasons in 2017.

Duncan has elevated his game to another level this season, averaging a career-high 29 disposals to become a genuine elite midfielder alongside Selwood and Dangerfield. The 26-year-old ranks eighth league-wide for effective disposals per game and fifth for uncontested possessions per game.

Tuohy has proven himself to be one of the Cats’ most creative and efficient ball user in his first season at Simonds Stadium, averaging a career-high 24.6 disposals.

The Irishman also ranks sixth in rebound 50’s and metres gained.

Have your say in the poll below as to whether the All-Australian selectors got it right or wrong in omitting Duncan and Tuohy from this year’s 40-man squad.
