Geelong has confirmed its first exchange of the 2026 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, with the club securing the services of star defender Jordan Ridley for the 2027 season.

The trade was completed on Wednesday, with the Cats sending a future first-round pick (2027), a future second-round pick (2028) and Jack Bowes to Essendon, in exchange for Ridley, Pick 60 and a future fourth-round pick (2028).

It marks Geelong's second move of the player movement period, after the club confirmed the signing of Toby Greene as a free agent late last week.

Ridley commenced his AFL journey in 2016, when he was selected by the Bombers with pick 22 in the National Draft.

He would play just nine AFL games across his first three seasons at the elite level, but 2020 proved to be a breakout year where he announced himself as one of the best intercepting defenders in the competition.

Ridley finished the 2020 season ranked third in the AFL for intercept marks, earning selection in the initial All Australian squad and winning Essendon's best and fairest award.

He would continue that hot form into 2021, averaging 21 disposals per game and leading the Bombers for both intercept possessions and spoils.

The strong stretch saw Ridley earn selection in the 22Under22 team in back-to-back years, firmly establishing himself as one of the game's best defensive players.

It was not all smooth sailing however and after another solid campaign in 2022, Ridley battled injury and featured in 26 AFL games across the following three seasons.

Geelong Executive General Manager of Football Andrew Mackie said Ridley would be a valuable addition to the Club’s playing squad.

“We’re excited to welcome Jordan to the Geelong Football Club,” Mackie said.

“Jordan is a quality player who boasts experience and will be a great addition to our backline group. We’re looking forward to seeing what Jordan can bring to the Club in the future.”

As the Cats welcome Ridley, Geelong farewells midfielder Jack Bowes after four seasons in the Hoops. Bowes departs having played 69 AFL games for the Club, including the 2025 Grand Final.

Joining the Cats at the end of the 2022 season, Bowes quickly became a respected member of the team’s midfield mix, while also making a strong contribution at VFL level when required.

“Jack has been a great teammate and person to have around our Club for the last four seasons,” Mackie said.

“We know Jack has plenty of good football ahead of him and are pleased he has the opportunity to continue his career at Essendon. We wish Jack, Jasmine and Charlie all the best for the future.”
