AFLW Draft Pick 34: Gemma Wright

Gemma Wright Interview Geelong has selected Gemma Wright with the 34th pick in the 2019 AFLW Draft.

Geelong has selected Gemma Wright with pick 34 in the 2019 NAB AFLW Draft.

Wright was crowned the 2019 Carlton VFLW Best and Fairest winner after a stellar season.

The former Keilor player made the move to the Blues in 2019 and played 14 games averaging 10 disposals from defence.

“I am feeling pretty stoked,” Wright said.

“It is amazing to be able to call myself a Cat and it is exciting.”

It was a special day for the Wright family with Gemma’s sister Sarah also having her name called out by North Melbourne.

“I think there will be a little bit of rivalry.”

“Some of our family are North Melbourne supporters, so I will be a little bit of the dark sheep, but we will see how we go.”

The 25-year-old is known for her aerial ability down back and believes her ‘competitive’ nature is a major strength of her game.

“I think coming into the year I just want to do my best.”

“I want to show the football world what I am like as a player and give (the coaches) every opportunity to play me.”

AFLW Recruiting and Operations Manager Ben Waller was impressed with Wright’s versatility.

“We think Gemma can play a number of different roles,” Waller said.

“It is her first year in the state competition after coming from Keilor, so Gemma at 25, we think she has a lot of improvement left in her.”
