2026 Pre-Season Training - Monday February 9 | Shaun Mannagh

It is quite incredible how much can change in a few short years, especially in the world of football.

Most will have heard the story of Shaun Mannagh; the VFL superstar who finally got his chance at the elite level, joining Geelong as a mature aged recruit in 2023.

His importance to the Cats' line-up can not be understated, showing an ability to find the footy with ease and hitting the scoreboard frequently, while also able to roam across the ground and have a strong impact.

With 35 games under his belt, Mannagh has already recorded a top 10 finish in the Carji Greeves Medal and won the AFLCA's best young player award in 2025.

Certainly not forgetting his roots, Mannagh said it has been an incredible full-circle moment that he is now able to provide advice to footballers in a similar position.

"I have been lucky enough to have a few people reach out," Mannagh said on SEN Fireball.

"It is quite humbling when you get that, because not long ago you were in their shoes probably doing the same thing. My advice really is just head down and bum up, always look for ways to get better because there is always different ways to do that.

"In your role within the team as well, I think at Werribee we built a really good culture on the team-first mentality and went on to win a lot of games. Individuals get accolades off the back of that, but it is all about buying into the team and playing your best role within that environment.

"Hopefully that showcases your talents and you can get picked up from there, but it is more hard work than anything."

Set to head into his third AFL season with Geelong, Mannagh looms as a key Cat to keep an eye on as he continues his development into 2026.

His first full season at the top level was a raging success, averaging over 18 disposals per game and kicking 31 goals for the year, while also finishing fourth at the club for clearances.

But when quizzed on his pre-season discussions with Chris Scott, Mannagh said he is looking for ways to be a better connector between each line heading into the new campaign.

"Just talking about my role within the team, and how I can impact the best way," Mannagh said.

"Obviously we have got a pretty decent line-up in terms of stars across the midfield and forward line, looking at how I can connect with those guys.

"Scotty is always big on bringing our best game to the team, if each individual brings their best or plays to their strengths then we are a better team for it.

"A lot of it is around that and obviously our backline is quite good as well, so specifically for me it is how I can impact forward of the ball and help connect with those guys around me."

Mannagh was also asked about the Cats' finish to 2025, providing a confident answer and confirming that Geelong are ready to compete at the pointy end of the season once again this year.

"We actually got a question like this last week at Community Camp, my answer was that it still hurts now," Mannagh admitted.

"You are still dealing with it but at the same time, it is a job. As soon as pre-season comes back around, you are focusing on 2026 and the new season.

"I think we have had a pretty good pre-season so far, obviously everyone will be saying that at this time of year but I think everyone came back with the right attitude.

"It is not like it is redemption or anything, it is more about putting the head down and we know we were good enough last year, but we are quite confident that we can go the distance again."
