Mellor on his draft night experience

I was obviously waiting around on Thursday night to see if I was going to get selected.

'Wellsy,' Ross [Hill], Simon Murphy and Tom Lonergan came around to my house about a week before, and said if I slipped through that they were going to take me in the Rookie Draft. I was pretty disappointed for about five minutes after the National Draft, then they called me up and I was pumped.

I don't know if you saw the video but my mates were a couple of streets over, I told them I was unlikely for the National. I called up 'Murph' and I said there hasn't been an announcement, can the boys come over and celebrate?

So all the Cats recruiters were over and all the boys have flaring through, cause they were pretty up and about. It was a good night and I couldn't be more grateful.

Yeah it was pretty cool, I didn't expect them to be so up and about.

It was great, they made the night so special for me.

They were some of my best mates from Geelong, it is great to be able to stay around with them as well. 

Mellor on becoming a Geelong footballer

It is unreal.

It just crazy because this is your dream as a kid, you always think about playing AFL.

But just realising how hard it is to actually get on a list, now that I am here I am just giving it my all. 

Mellor on what sets him apart

I think just my ability one-on-one ahead of the ball, my ability to find shots on goal pretty consistently.

Hopefully I can build myself up to become an AFL player.

I have definitely been loving training, I have got the belief in myself that I will be able to get there. It is up to me now. 

Mellor on his flexibility at work this year

That was a huge part of my footy this year.

Down at St Patrick's Primary School, they were such a big help.

I was in their Year 5 team and the principal was so supportive, I would have a fair few days off with footy and stuff like that.

They were so supportive, I would have a day off on Thursday to do my vision and recovery which was great.
