The Cats officially booked their spot in September on Sunday with a dominant victory over Sydney, but there is still plenty to play for as attention turns to a clash with Richmond in the final round of the home and away season.

It is as simple as win and secure a home final for Geelong, a victory over the Tigers would lock in a top two spot and would see the Cats host a Qualifying Final at the MCG in the first week of September.

There are still a number of scenarios that can play out in the final round of the regular season, with second down to seventh on the ladder separated by one game and percentage at the end of Round 23.

Check out all the major details ahead of Geelong's clash with Richmond at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, proudly presented by Villawood Properties.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Geelong: Jack Martin

Looking likely to be a real X-Factor for the Cats heading into September, Martin is continuing to build a strong second half of the season and has had a big impact since making the move into Geelong's forward 50.

With Jeremy Cameron well held on Sunday, Jack Martin stepped up and performed strongly finishing with two goals, two goal assists and an equal game-high nine score involvements, looking a class above every time he got the footy.

Martin has now kicked eight goals and dished off five goal assists across his last four games, forming a very strong trio alongside Cameron and Shannon Neale which will test any of the competition's best defensive units.

Richmond: Jacob Hopper

Hopper has been ultra consistent for Richmond in 2025, continuing to find plenty of the footy each week and providing leadership amongst a young Tigers team.

Out of his 22 games for the season, Hopper has only been held under 20 disposals on one occasion and currently sits 19th in the AFL for total disposals this year, while also sitting 16th in the competition for total clearances.

Hopper finished with 27 disposals and six clearances on the weekend despite the loss to North Melbourne, showing that his standards have not diminished despite the season nearing its conclusion.

RECENT HISTORY - Geelong v Richmond

Geelong have started to gain the ascendancy in this matchup, chalking up their fifth win in the last six contests when they defeated the Tigers in Round 17 this year.

The five victories have come by an average winning margin of 41 points for the Cats, with the only tight contest coming in a famous 2022 clash, when Jack Henry kicked a match-winner late in the game.

Richmond did claim victory in the most recent clash between the two sides at the MCG, but with a spot in the top two on the line for Geelong this weekend, expect them to come out firing on Saturday afternoon.

VENUE HISTORY - MCG

Geelong have not stepped onto the hallowed turf at the MCG for a while, but their record paints a nice picture in 2025 with three wins from four games at the venue, including victories over Finals contenders in Collingwood and Hawthorn.

Historically, the Cats season record at the MCG has always been a good indicator of their premiership hopes, winning a combined 28 of 30 games at the venue between 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2022.
