The VFLW Cats mounted a spirited comeback, but ultimately fell 13 points short against Casey on Saturday afternoon.

After surrendering a 29 point lead to the Demons shortly after quarter time, Geelong clawed their way back into the contest booting five of the last seven goals to pull within striking distance late in the game.

Brooke Plummer continued her strong form amassing 23 disposals, while Abbey McDonald lead the way through the middle for the Cats with 21 possessions and six clearances.

With their backs against the wall early, Geelong leaked four goals in the opening term to find themselves trailing by 24 points at the first break.

After conceding the opening goal of the second quarter, Geelong started to make their move when debutant Lillee Barendsen hit the scoreboard midway through the term, to open the Cats account for the afternoon.

Despite being 22 points adrift at the main break, Geelong had managed to find their share of the footy around the ground and started to swing the momentum back in their favour.

The Cats continued to surge after half time, with Jamilla Cranny and Zoe Larkins both booting goals to narrow the margin to 18 points at the final change.

Barendsen booted her second major early in the final term, while Bridie Collings also slotted her first goal on debut but ultimately the deficit was too big for the Cats to overcome.

Gabbi Featherston was strong on her return from injury collecting 17 disposals, while Poppy Schaap was elite around the contest with 19 posessions and 12 tackles.

Geelong finished with positive numbers in plenty of the major statistical categories, including Inside 50 entries (+5) and tackles (+13) while also holding their own around stoppages.

The VFLW Cats head to Williamstown next weekend, for a clash with the Seagulls on Sunday afternoon.
