The VFLW Cats have fallen to a strong Collingwood outfit, going down by 42 points at Deakin University on Saturday afternoon.

Geelong held their own in general play for much of the day, winning their fair share of clearances and laying plenty of tackles, but ultimately were unable to capitalise in their forward half.

Lily Jordan put together a stellar performance for Geelong, amassing 19 disposals and six clearances while also laying 11 tackles in an inspiring display through the midfield.

Abbey McDonald continued her strong form collecting a game high 24 disposals, while Mia Fuller laid an impressive 11 tackles down back.

With the race for finals starting to heat up, the clash against Collingwood posed as an important one for the Cats, with just one game separating fifth to twelfth on the VFLW ladder.

Geelong were forced to defend for most of the opening term as the Magpies amassed 13 inside 50 entries, but the backline stood tall conceding just two goals, as the Cats trailed by 13 points at the first break.

Abbey McDonald lead the charge off half back, continuing on from her dominant display last week as she picked up 10 possessions in the opening term.

The Cats flipped the momentum in the second term and controlled plenty of the play, but were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard, as they went into half time 25 points adrift of the Magpies.

Lily Jordan put together a great opening half with 11 disposals and five clearances, while Bella Smith was strong in her Cats debut with nine disposals and five tackles at the main break.

The trend continued in the third quarter, the Cats found plenty of the footy through the middle but were unable to impact the scoreboard, as Collingwood skipped away to a 33 point lead at the final break.

The Magpies closed the game out late, keeping the Cats goalless while adding one more of their own in the last quarter to seal the 42 point win.

The VFLW Cats will head up the highway next Saturday for a clash with the Casey Demons, with the first bounce at 2.30pm.
