Geelong is mourning the loss of George Goninon last week at the age of 96.

Goninon played 78 games for the Cats between 1950 and 1954, and 87 games overall, after playing his first three seasons with Essendon.

A member of the 1951 and 1952 premiership teams, Goninon was the club’s leading goal kicker across four of his five seasons, finishing with 278 goals for the Cats.

Goninon’s final game was the 1954 Preliminary Final against Melbourne, and his passing leaves Bill McMaster as the only surviving member of the 1951 and 1952 premiership teams.

A private funeral will be held in Darwin later this week.
