Geelong Cats will play its first home and away match in Darwin in the Club’s history as part of the 2024 AFL Premiership Season.

The AFL confirmed on Monday morning the Gold Coast Suns would host the Cats in Round 10 at TIO Stadium on Thursday 16 May. The match up will be the opening game of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

The start time of the match will be confirmed later in the week when the AFL releases the full 2024 fixture.

“We welcome the opportunity to play for Premiership points in Darwin for the first time in the Club’s history and are excited to be part of the match up against the Gold Coast Suns that opens the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round,” Geelong Cats CEO Steve Hocking said.

As part of the news today, the AFL announced a new agreement with Northern Territory Major Events that will see three games per season played in the NT for the next three years.

The agreement, which spans from 2024-2026, will see the Gold Coast SUNS play two matches in Darwin and Melbourne play one game in Alice Springs, each season.

The AFL will confirm ticketing information for the Cats Round 10 match in the coming weeks
