Senior coach Dan Lowther was pleased with his team's performance after Geelong secured an AFLW finals berth for a second consecutive season with a 40-point victory over Hawthorn at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.

The Cats entered the final round with their fate in their own hands and Lowther was pleased with the way his side responded to the challenge.

"We all knew that we had to win to guarantee ourselves a spot in the post season so to respond off the back of a really strong four quarter game again (and) to get the result was great," Lowther told geelongcats.com.au post-game.

The game was played with great intensity early with Hawthorn applying 24 tackles in a low scoring opening term, with the Cats narrow seven-point leaders at the first break.

After regrouping at quarter-time, Nina Morrison and Rebecca Webster ignited the Cats with two goals in quick succession.

From quarter time until the full time siren the Cats would pile on eight goals to three, taking advantage of the ball spending 69% of time in their forward half during that period, to run out comfortable 40-point victors.

"It was always going to be a hard slog to begin with, but after quarter time to have the urgency to play the same way that we've played the last couple of weeks.

"And, to get through that first pressure point and to have the composure to find the outside release players and get the ball forward was promising."

Georgie Prespakis was prolific for the home side finishing with a game-high 35 disposals (18 contested), eight clearances, three goal assists and 559 metres gained.

"Georgie is just going from strength to strength. She had a bit of a tag in the second half today that she found a way to get through which is positive, with a bit of support from her teammates."

Morrison was another to lead by example impacting the game on the inside and outside with 34 disposals, seven clearances and six score involvements.

"Nina just continues to show her versatility, she can play as an outside runner on the wing if she needs to or she can play inside and have just as much effect for us which is great.

"Nina's fight is unparalleled across the competition and she's going to take us a long way I think."

Chloe Scheer reached the 50 goal milestone with three majors, all coming in a row during the third and fourth quarters to help secure the win.

At the other end of the ground Claudia Gunjaca continued her strong season in her 25th career game.

"I think our unit behind the ball is building from week to week. The partnership with (Claudia) Gunjaca has gone to another level this year on the back of her footy going to another level this year," captain Meghan McDonald said post-game.

"I think she has been really outstanding and every time I see the ball go over my head and I get a bit worried, there she is taking an intercept."

McDonald was 'very proud' of the team's performance.

"We've got such an awesome mix at the moment. We've got a beautiful balance of people that have been here a long time and new people as well. As a leader of the group the thing that is most pleasing now is everyone is taking ownership of taking us forward, whether that is Prespakis going from strength to strength each week, Nina fighting or every time we come together as a huddle Becky is taking more of the pump ups. So, little things like that are exciting that the team is leading themselves."

Lowther was equally pleased by the team's performance.

"This group are galvanising really well and looking forward to next week, whoever that might be. They deserve to play finals for the way that they've played throughout the 10 games."
