Three players across the Cats VFL and VFLW programs have been named in the initial team of the year squads, following stellar seasons in their respective competitions.

In the Smithy’s VFL competition, Ollie Dempsey has been selected amongst the 40 best players for the 2023 season and is in contention to be named in the team of the year.

The young Cat played just 14 games at VFL level this season, but dominated when he did averaging over 21 disposals a game while also booting 18 goals.

Dempsey relished in his role further up the ground, amassing a season high 32 disposals against Casey while collecting 29 disposals and five goals against the Northern Bullants.

The 20 year old also averaged over six score involvements per game, being rewarded for his strong VFL form with five games at AFL level in 2023.

From the Cats VFLW side, Abby Favell and Charlotte Simpson have both been named in the initial 40 player squad ahead of the final team of the year selection.

Favell joined Geelong this season following stints with the Hawthorn VFLW and Murray Bushranger programs, averaging nearly 17 disposals and eight contested possessions per game in 2023.

The exciting young talent amassed a season high 32 disposals against Port Melbourne, while also laying almost five tackles per game across 14 matches this season.

Charlotte Simpson adds another individual accolade to her resume this year, after claiming the Cats VFLW best and fairest for the 2023 season.

In her first full VFLW season Simpson averaged 23 disposals and seven clearances throughout the year, while also picking up an incredible 14 contested possessions per game.

The final team of the year selection’s will be announced on the 18th of September, at the 2023 VFL and VFLW awards.
